Faults:

Replaced brakes at 107,961 miles.

Replaced intake manifold at 121,980 miles.

Replaced timing belt at 68,776 and at 122,175 miles (normal maintenance item}.

Replaced alternator at 98,897 miles.

Replaced coil assembly at 122,175 miles.

Replaced wheel bearings at 124,442 miles.

Alarm system sporadically goes off with no one near car. Dealer has not been able to pin-point cause.

General Comments:

This has been a very reliable car. It was just totaled in a car accident, or I would still be driving it. (Neither driver was hurt, attesting to the solidness of the car, since I hit a car that ran a stop sign and I was going 45-50 mph. She has a Hyundai Accent 2004.) For a car with 133,000 miles, it still ran good and was quiet, with no rattling noises. Everything still worked great. It handled good and was good in snow. I averaged 35 miles per gallon, combined highway/in-town traveling. It was a very comfortable-riding car. I drove it 84 miles per day going to/from work. I'm looking for another Elantra to replace it.

Faults:

2 TPS sensors have failed, 1 replaced on warranty.

1 crankshaft sensor has failed, car would not start, car finally started after about 20 starting attempts, got check engine light, brought it to dealer, got it fixed under warranty.

Paint chipped on both rear-view mirrors.

Passenger seat air-bag sensor failed. Not covered on warranty.

Fuel pump connection failed; car would not start.

1 ignition coil failed, got stranded on road.

Lots of recalls, exhaust manifold, brake booster, computer reprogram, fuel line repositioning, though work all performed free of charge.

Driver side electric window switch failed.

A load of other minor intermittent electrical problems of all kinds and lots of check engine lights.

Car has basically lots of difficulty getting from one oil change to the other, without some kind of problem appearing.

General Comments:

For the money, I think this car offers a nice comfortable ride with lot of room and decent power. Too bad it's always broken.

Beware! The fuel economy ratings advertised for this car do not match at all real life driving. Just as Hyundai advertised false horse power ratings, I think they did the same with the fuel economy ratings. On highway driving I never get better than 8 liter per 100 Kilometers, and combined highway and city driving usually gives me around 9.5 liters per 100 K, and this being not hard on the gas pedal.

Faults:

Check engine light came on 3 days after driving it.

Thermostat replaced after two months of going in and out of the shop for the check engine light.

Fume leak (check engine light again)

Radiator replaced after over heating 8 months of owning this car.

Leak in the AC unit.

General Comments:

I am financing a 2001 Hyundai Elantra that I got in January of 2006 (used). After about 3 days of me driving it the check engine light came on. After taking it to the place I was financing my Hyundai they found that the thermostat sensor was going out. Replaced it then a few days later the light came back on. After about 2 months of going in and out of the shop for the same problem I was told that after the engine warmed up that the thermostat was reading cold by about -500 degrees F. they replaced the thermostat one day before it for inspection. It passed. The next day the check engine light came back on. I was told it was a gas fume leak some where from the gas cap to the engine. After about 2 more months of them doing nothing more the checking the check engine codes I gave up going back over this issue. The light still comes on randomly once ever two or three weeks stays on for about 3 days before it goes off again. This is only one of many problems I have been having with my Elantra. I had the radiator recently blow up giving it a large crack. The car did not start running hot until right after the radiator got over heated. After replacing the radiator I have found a major leak in one of the AC lines. This is the next thing that is about to be fixed. Wonder what is next?
