1998 Hyundai Tiburon

Summary:

Definitely lots of bang and style for the buck!

Faults:

The clear coat on the vehicle is coming off.

General Comments:

This car has the look of no other has out there. That is why I purchased it. I don't see 50 of them when I drive, that is nice because it makes it all that more unique to me. To this day, I still get people who ask me what the car is as they have not seen one.

Now, Hyundai, in my opinion, did not do a good job redesigning the new model, which makes me love my model even more!

I love my car. It's fun, it's sporty, good inside and out, and it looks great!

1998 Hyundai Tiburon

Faults:

I have only owned it barely a year and the paint is flying off it at the speed of light. On the spoiler, roof, door handles (and not just around the key hole - at the front the wind is pulling it off!) and the side view mirrors on the front side, all of the paint has "blown" off and I am in the process of contacting Hyundai because there is no way a proper paint job would do this!

The "check engine light" is on every time I fuel up and I found out that it is due to a fuel tank leak I have.

I was looking on the net trying to find someone with the same paint problem as I have, and found out why my engine light was on and why I wasn't getting the gas mileage I used to instead.

I love my car, that is why I am so upset. It is comfortable and stylish. If Hyundai fixes all these problems for me then yes, I will buy another Hyundai. I like their new SUV that just came out.

When I bought my Tiburon, after approx 6 months the paint on the passenger's side rear view mirror started to fly off. I took it to the Hyundai here in Miami and they had the mirror repainted at no cost to me...

Good luck!

I purchased a 1999 Hyundai Sonata 2 years ago. The paint on the side mirrors and door molding on the passenger side is also "flying" off. Hyundai will not pay to repair the paint because I have 54,000 miles on the car and the warranty only covers the paint up to 36,000 miles. The dealership said they would not fix it because "we don't know what you've been doing to the car or where you've been driving it". I think a class action lawsuit is in order for all us Hyundai owners with paint problems.

1998 Hyundai Tiburon 140 h.p.

Faults:

In two months, the car has been to the shop five times. Once for brakes, three times for a faulty clock, twice for bad ECM, in addition to rattles, squeaks, faulty seatbelt retractor, and other quality-based problems too numerous to mention. The car has been out of the shop for a week and so far nothing new has developed and nothing old has reappeared.

General Comments:

It's a sharp looking car that gets a lot of attention but truthfully when people ask about reliability and service, I can't recommend they rush out and buy one. For one thing, there's only one dealership anywhere near the area where I live, and from what I can tell, the service department is less than brilliant. IF the car stays trouble-free, I MIGHT consider buying another because the hatchback feature is a big plus and there aren't too many other manufacturers offering hatchback convenience. IF I keep experiencing problems mechanically then I will definitely NOT buy another Hyundai nor will I recommend Hyundai to anyone else.

I agree with you, I would never recommend a Tiburon to any one. in 16 months I have had to put in 2 ECM, 1 transmission, 1 throttle sensor. the car jumps at high speeds since last may and the problem is still not fixed as they do not know what the problem is. I have hit my head twice at high speeds when I go in passing gear. as we speak my car is in the shop for wheel bearings. I had to rent a car to get to work. the car has been in the shop so much that I have to get rid of it as it is a money pit. I did own a 1987 pony and loved that car. I will never buy another Hyundai as the cars are not reliable and the service is very bad.

1998 Hyundai Tiburon FX 2.0

Faults:

A creeking headliner which I fixed. And some annoying little squeeks and creaks.

General Comments:

Awesome handling. Must buy in the 5-spd though. The auto robs too much power. Quicker than the BMW 318ti, without the 24k price tag. Got my FX for $16,400.

You have to drive one to understand.
