2002 Isuzu Rodeo LX

Summary:

Great, but risky

Faults:

On-going Transmission Problems; I purchased it with a just installed rebuilt transmission. All was fine for 13 months. It then began jerking/shifting hard after highway driving after approx 1 hour. Tranny shop found no major issues.. I had minor tranny maintenance/adjustments made. After much internet research I decided to have the inhibitor switch replaced. I did... then took the vehicle on a road trip last week. All was perfect for 6.5 hours of driving. (this was abnormal... it would usually start jerking after 1 hour) The 2nd day of our road trip, it jerked Extremely hard (like it never had before) after 2 hours of driving. So I am at a loss to what is happening... and what to do with this vehicle. Any suggestions?

General Comments:

I really like this vehicle... affordable SUV with the perks of a more expensive SUV... however I don't like the unreliability and the mystery of the transmission problems. (it also has a shimmy at 65 that won't' go away... but I can live with that)

2002 Isuzu Rodeo 2.2

Summary:

Love the space, hate the issues!!

Faults:

I am SO glad to have found this site to see that I'm not the only one with these issues!! Heres the problems that my Rodeo has!

*Gas Gauge does NOT work. Shows I'm empty after driving about 35 miles on a FULL tank.

*Check Engine light stays on.

*Back windshield wiper does NOT work.

*Windshield wipers just recently started to hesitate.

*Window moldings stick to windows and it sounds like I am driving with my windows down.

*Engine constantly taps.

Most of these started almost immediately after I bought the vehicle at only 35k miles!!! That's INSANE! I can't get rid of it either bcs I owe way more than its worth and NO ONE would want to buy it. Runs great, never left me stranded, but these "electrical type issues" drive me insane!

2002 Isuzu Rodeo

Summary:

Unreliable, costly, a mistake

Faults:

The ABS light came on and stayed on after owning the car for 1 month.

The check engine light came on after 3 years, had the car checked was told it was a cam shaft position sensor or "it might just be a computer malfunction".

Advised not to have repaired unless the car started to signs of a problem. One year later had to have it repaired, cost $1,500.

Last week, car is now 5 years old, 28,500 miles, fuel pump went out. Cost of repair $530.00.

Nearest dealer 150 miles away, so warranty is useless.

General Comments:

With only 28,500 miles in 5 years and the amount of money I've spent in major repairs is absurd. One can only guess what will go next on it.

2002 Isuzu Rodeo

Summary:

Gas guzzling mystery..

Faults:

I've had this car just about a month (purchased March 31) and already I'm having problems. The car constantly has either the check engine light, or the ABS light on. As of yesterday April 27, both lights are on at the same time. Also I can never tell exactly how much gas is in the tank. It's like I'm getting a false reading.

When I very first got the car, I believed that maybe the gas tank was leaking. I just couldn't believe how much gas this SUV guzzled in a week. After my son took a look at the tank I realized that I would be needing to fill the tank at least once a week, maybe even more.

I'm not even sure what's going on with the ABS light. It came on a couple of days ago, and has not gone off since. I am a single mother, and needed the car to get back and forth to work... and get my children to school. I called the dealer today and was told that the repair shop closed at noon. I plan to call them first thing Monday morning to get this vehicle looked at.

After reading all of the information on the web about the problems associated with this vehichle, I'm really sorry I bought it.

General Comments:

I like the look and the feel of my Rodeo, I'm just really worried about the problems that I've had in less than a month of ownership.

Hey I had the same problem, it is because your gas cap is not closed correctly or all the way. You must turn it off put the cap off then on, it should have three clicks. then turn it back on and after about 2-5 miles the ABS lite turns off. I'm not sure about the gas guzzling part, it is an SUV. I got what I expected, have had no problems. A great warranty and auto service.

I believe it would be your fuel sending unit. Apparently they go bad on these vehicles!! As I've read up on the Rodeos they all seem to have the same issues over and over!!

My 2002 is my second Rodeo... first was a 2000. I currently have put 150k on the '02 and only just had the timing belt and water pump replaced. I simply love it!!! As far as the 2000 though, it was exactly how others have described: problems, problems, problems... I loved the style and look and the size so when they did some modifications in the 2002 I thought I would try it again. Well, I'm glad I did because it has been nothing, but WONDERFUL!!

I bought my Rodeo 3 1/2 years ago from the dealer. It is a 2002. I have had no trouble at all with the exception of the engine light coming on when I idle too long. I was stuck in a drive thru for almost 10 minutes and the check engine light came on. I have had it come on at a few other times after idling. It soon goes off and I don't worry about it. As well, as mentioned by someone else, if the gas cap isn't tight it will come on.

I just had the timing belt and water pump replaced (preventative measures only) and I'm at 138,000 km.

I love my Rodeo and I don't find it to be much worse than any other larger vehicle in terms of gas usage.

I have heard the EGR valve will turn on the check engine light when idle.
