1991 Isuzu Trooper Base 2.8 liter V6

Summary:

Old Reliable

Faults:

Very bad gas mileage. I think the throttle body is just about shot.

Radiator is leaking.

Oil leak somewhere around engine.

Steering is a little loose.

A/c needs a little repair.

EGR valve went bad.

Exhaust leak around exhaust manifold.

Passenger side headlight keeps blowing up (literally).

General Comments:

Overall, this is a very dependable vehicle. It cranks every time, and has plenty of room. The 2.8 liter is really embarrassing in the area of get up and go. Really embarrassing. But the 4 wheel drive is unbelievable.

This truck is a keeper. I'll fix the throttle body in order to get better gas mileage, and do some mending on the interior. It just keeps going without a complaint.

1991 Isuzu Trooper

Summary:

Good, reliable car with a few annoying problems

Faults:

Driving it, especially on the freeway, was very noisy. I would have to blast the radio to drown out the nose. I'm not sure what part of the car it was, but it sounded like a lawnmower.

The sealing on the wings (side windows) was weak.

The car shook badly and the steering wheel vibrated so hard that my hands would get numb.

Gas mileage was poor, but it was an SUV.

Very easy to over-steer (I found this out the hard way!)

The radio got bad reception, even in local areas.

The gas light wouldn't go off, and the the car ran out of gas a few times because I couldn't gauge how low the gas was.

Very difficult to get it up to speed. I would be stomping on the accelerator pedal and it would be creeping up in speed.

The windshield wipers had only 3 speeds, either too fast or too slow. The didn't clean the shield very thoroughly either.

General Comments:

This car was a pleasure to drive. I loved being so high in relation to the road and other cars. I felt more able to react to other drivers.

Lots of cargo room.

The seats were incredibly comfortable. I had to sleep in it a few times, and just laying down in the back seat was great.

The gear shift was in a comfortable position in relation to the seat.

It broke well.

The gear shift shifted smoothly.

Very attractive exterior and interior.

1991 Isuzu Trooper SE 2.8 V6

Faults:

Virtually nothing mechanical has ever been a problem.

It was well maintained by both the first and second owner, and now by me.

The engine and transmission were rebuilt at 225,000 miles, but were both still operative.

Although spartan cosmetically, the interior space is exceptional. It seats a family of five, or two adults with camping gear for a cross continental.

Best of all... it does everything that a stock showroom 4X4 can do, and does it with chilling air conditioning and heat-stroke heating systems.

Unfortunately, the post 1991 models doubled in price, added posh interiors, and consequently diminished the concept of a true 4X4 that could be town or country.

Buy a 1984-1991 Isuzu Trooper and restore it. You will have a car for a lifetime.

1991 Isuzu Trooper LS 2.8 V6

Faults:

The only thing I have had gone wrong is a slight exhaust leak. A bolt had backed out and had to be re-tightened.

Almost forgot, the left side of the drivers seat is wearing and has little holes.

General Comments:

This is a great vehicle off road. I think, if pushed it'll go anywhere most other stock 4x4s will go.

I get good gas mileage. I get 18-19 mpg in town and 21-23 on the highway.

There is plenty of room inside and on the top, you can carry a lot of gear for a family of 4 or 5.

One of the good features is that the V6 is made my General Motors and maintenance is inexpensive and parts are widely available.

I use the vehicle for my business and family and it can't be beat.

I only paid $1850 and it is nearly like new.

I have a 1991 with a 2.6L engine 4 banger, and the engine parts are very cheap, plus this little engine is even more reliable than it's American counterpart, although the fuel economy is about the same.

I absolutely love my trooper, and think it is the best vehicle on the road, and off road. I have had slight exhaust problems, but they were easily and cheaply solved. a trooper is a very smart buy for anyone. I got mine when I turned 16 for about $800 and he's still running strong. very solid, can go just about everywhere, I haven't been through everything, but he can handle a lot!!! keep troopers going. their a dieing breed.

I owned a '91 LS as well for about 3 years, and didn't have any problems with it (that I could find). After time on the highway, if I turned right or left at a light, I'd get a shudder in the drive train. Never figured out what it was as it was sporadic and it never got worse.

I had the GM 2.8 V6 and 4:55 gears creating lots of low end power, but ho hum highway performance... not that you'd want to go faster than 65 mph.
