1999 Isuzu Trooper 3.5L
Summary:
This is a bomb-proof rig!
Faults:
I have owned my 1999 Trooper since it had 93k on the odometer.
Right around 125k I had to replace the transmission. The only GM part in the car! It started to shift really sloppy, and despite efforts to constantly keep the fluid topped off (next to impossible - as someone didn't put a dip stick on it), it still died. I replaced the transmission with a used model with 51k on it, and have not had a problem since.
General Comments:
It's a great rig. Very dependable and one of the most long lasting trucks I have ever owned.
It handles well - is still smooth at 70+ mph, and I recently drove it from Atlanta to S. Florida without a single problem.
Sure it eats some oil - they all do. I use about 1.2 qts every 3k.
The 3.5L produces sufficient power - could use a diesel or a more efficient V8. It is bomb proof reliable in my opinion.
I had a friend with a 97, and another with a 98, and both have pushed theirs past 200k. I am 182K and running super strong. It has no rough idles, no shakes, pings, knocks or leaks!!! I love it!
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

I agree with the 'bomb-proof' analogy, I have a'92 with more than 300,000 kilometeres on it. The body has some rust, but she keeps on running fine. Plenty of room inside and a great smooth ride to boot!
