2002 Jaguar X-Type 3.0

Summary:

Looks great, didn't get me home STAY AWAY FROM JAGUAR X-TYPE

Faults:

Tranny, Electrical, Trim.

Lets see, classic Jaguar looks come along with the 70s-80s reliability issues @factory AND @Dealer. Read on:

Day one, proudly showing off the new Jag to in-laws, pops pointed out the broken taillight. 10 minutes of ownership, back to the dealer the next morning.

2 weeks, kitty ornment on hood stolen (affixed by the factory with a cheap spring) $45 to replace it with a cheap looking plastic medallion. Had to return it as the medalion was on crooked, dealer only had 4.0 liter ones left.

Then we dented the "boot" trying to slam the trunk closed 20+ times to get it to stay put. See fact. TSB XT501-04 and fix it please...

10/13/02 at 4800 miles the tranny light went on, car would barely move. The shop-guy got stuck taking the "test-drive", needed a flatbed. Had to beg for a loaner (got Merc Sable). They replaced it in 72 hours, not bad except...

12/28/02 8400 miles, on our way home from Florida (to NY), tranny light and a dead stop on I95/beltway on a Sunday Eve after Xmas. Called service, Monday??? I got the car rolling again by somehow shifting violently anbd it snapped into 4th (only 4th), drove it home 300 miles.

General Comments:

Looks great, drives great (but only 16mpg). My first and certainly LAST Jag, I could have gotten a nice 1990 XJ-6 for $3500 and had fewer problems. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR, the BMW 325IX or Benz 4-Matic C-Class will get you there (and home!) far better.

I am having the same problem with my x-type.

I regret the day I bought this vehicle. Spent more days in workshop than on the road, within the first 8 months, numerous problems electrics interior rattles, computer failed, key had to be reprogrammed the list goes on. Traded in on a Lexus gs300. Don't buy Jaguar!

Seems to me like the first few problems, the light, the trunk and the hood ornament weren't defect. They were your own fault. The engine problems concern me... were your Jaguar manual or Auto??

Let's see. Picked up my Jaguar 3.0 X-type February, 2002. Before that winter was over I had to have it flat-bedded into dealer as thermostat broke and hot water hose blew. I've since had problems with the truck closing (not my problem - manufacturer's defect), gas tank lid stuck despite hitting the release button several times, brakes needed complete replacement after a year and a 1/2 (16,000 miles) and now I am told my transmission needs repairing, possibly replacing. All I can say is thank God that my lease is very near its end. I will NEVER lease, purchase, rent, etc. another Jaguar. The only positive thing I can share is that during my first incident, the service manager at the jaguar shop did predict all of my experienced troubles with this car.

2002 Jaguar X-Type 2.0

Summary:

Affordable Jag?...what can I say!

Faults:

The transmission blew at 11.000 miles. After much research, I discovered that it was a 'one off'.

General Comments:

Apart from the disaster with the transmission, which my dealer handled very well! The car has been tremendous. I love the feel and the handling is mind blowing. I live in Washington DC were snow is not uncommon, the four wheel drive was great.

I love the look of the car, except the rear... that does remind me of something 'ford-esque'.

2002 Jaguar X-Type 3.0

Summary:

A Ford Taurus with a jaguar sticker on it

Faults:

My head lights both switch on and off, to get them to work I have to get out of my car and hit one or both of the lights.

My steering wheel makes funny noises when I turn the wheel.

The driver side door rattles and sometimes doesn't open.

The back passenger side spring rattles.

My jack for the spare is completely rusted.

General Comments:

The car itself looks very nice, but the performance is very disappointing.

-I disagree, Jaguar's are great cars, though the X Type is a bit overpriced.

I agree, apart from that beautiful, I repeat beautiful interior and fairly stylish looks (if rather high-off-the-ground stance), this Jag is poor.

13th May 2007, 17:15

Yea, considering the Jaguar shares nothing at all with a Ford Taurus.

14th May 2007, 12:05

This car uses the Ford Contour's chassis and we all know what a great car that was.

Why did Ford base a jaguar on the mediocre ford contour is beyond me, but I know for a fact that when people take in their X-type's to the dealership the tech's laugh at them and tell the customers that the X-Type is not even a real jaguar.

This comment is a fact, this Ford built Jaguar is as unreliable and poorly built as any Jaguar of the B.L. era.

2002 Jaguar X-Type 2.5 2.5 Liter V6

Summary:

Cool, sophisticated car-not a reliable one

Faults:

Wind Shield wipers going on automatically even when there is no rain.

Exhaust is rattling.

Driver seat is rocking slightly back and fourth.

Car sometimes hesitates when accelerating.

General Comments:

I enjoy driving it, but I also am glad I leased it. It seems as though it will be a rather unreliable car. TYPICAL JAGUAR! It still looks beautiful though!

2002 Jaguar X-Type 3.0

Faults:

With only 4000 miles I have only had problems with the CD player and the connection of the Motorola phone.

General Comments:

The traction of the X is hard to break loose and compared to the Mercedes, a dream to drive in winter and on dry roads.

Couldn't agree more about the AWD.

In fact, when I bought the car, it wasn't a consideration. I liked all other aspects, it happened to come with AWD... So fine, I'll take that.

The day I picked it up from the dealer it was snowing. About 2" on the ground and no plowing/salting yet. By the time I got home (all of 8 miles) I was converted. It was like I was driving on dry pavement. Absolutely NONE of the "iffy" feel that any and every 2-wheel-drive car I've ever taken in the snow had. Rock-solid.

And while I know it's a subject of debate, I truly say I feel the effects of AWD even on dry pavement on a sunny day -- especially when taking a corner nice and fast and keeping toe on the gas, you can really feel that all 4 wheels are 'digging' the pavement and keeping the line true.
