1998 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4.0 Liter

Summary:

It breaks my heart that they discontinued the 4.0 engine

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with this car so far.

General Comments:

This will be the third Jeep Cherokee I've owned. I still have the second one and my dad bought my first one.

In all three Jeeps I've had the 4.0 liter engine and I've been pleased every time. This engine responds extremely well and is very reliable.

In the last two Jeeps I had the 5 speed manual transmission. So I must add, for those who really like the driving experience, I highly recommend the 4.0 combined with the 5 speed manual. You won't believe what the 4.0 can really do unless you get the standard transmission paired up with it.

The only issue I've ever really had was the lack of comfort. But, because of the reliability, performance, and the fact that it's just so much fun to drive, I'll take a Jeep over a Cadillac any day!

Oh, by the way, my second Jeep is closing in on 300,000 miles.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

OK, so I was wrong about the 4.0 being discontinued. What I really meant was the Jeep Cherokee. Anyway, it is now about a year after my purchase of my '98 and I finally ran into a problem that no mechanic can seem to help me with. When I take off after it's been sitting for a bit it cuts out and almost stalls, then after a bit it runs like a dream. It acts as if the fuel filter is plugged. I've taken it to a local Jeep dealer and had them run a diagnostic check. They told me everything was fine including the fuel filter/injectors, but, I need to give it a full tune up...DONE. Didn't help. So, I've been driving it with the problem and trying to convince myself I may be imagining things (which is hard to do when it sputters and lurches, throwing me back and forth in the drivers seat while everyone at the stop light is watching me and my Jeep dance the funky chicken through the intersection). Anyway, I took it to have new tires put on and I warned them of the problem so when they take it out for a test drive they're aware of it. The Jeep acted up on them (now I can relax...I'm not going insane after all) and they offered to take a look. The mechanic there ran some sea-foam (full strength fuel injector cleaner) and assured me that this fixed the problem. I was all excited and told him thank you many times. I then got into my beloved Jeep and started my merry way home. Guess what... It started again. So I ask you other Jeep fans, WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY JEEP??!! ANY suggestion would be helpful... other than selling it of course.

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L

Summary:

A Good SUV that needs to run off water

Faults:

For the short time that I had this Jeep, nothing went wrong with it. But like I said, a short time.

The only thing was I would always be late for oil changes (7000). I drove about 3500 miles a month.

Gas mileage is a issue that needs to be discussed because it's not what the manual says that it is. It's about 8 miles in the city and 12 miles on the highway.

General Comments:

This was my first SUV. I wanted a '98 Cherokee Sport because my cousin had one. I liked the way Sport was written across both side fenders. One thing I didn't like was the the bumper and the black part over the wheels was being faded by the sun. The part over the wheels (its on the fender) looked very ashy and only turned black when you put Armor All on it.

Well, I lost my baby (Jeep) in July of 2002 in an accident. I was T-Boned by an old station wagon who blew their stop sign at 50 mph. They hit me on the passenger side and I rolled over onto the roof landing on the sidewalk. TALK ABOUT SCARY!!! I had to climb out from under a caved in Jeep, laying on its roof top. I'm alright. The Jeep had no hope for restoration. TOTALED MEANS TOTALED. I wish I had pics, but I didn't take any.

Now, I got a 2000 Jeep LEMON Cherokee. I should have went another way.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L also, and I get about 16mpg highway and approx. 10 mpg city, and I have a 4 inch lift, and live in a not so flat part of the country, also known as West Virginia.

The fact that you went over twice as long before changing your oil probably had some effect on your gas mileage, and since you couldn't change your oil that often, this also leads me to believe you probably never changed your air filter either.

My point is, if you perform regular maintenance on your Jeep, and by that I mean 15 minutes a month checking your oil and other fluid levels, you probably would have saved yourself $1,000 in gas.

You've gotta make sure you check your tire pressures too, because if they're not where they should be, it can and will greatly effect the performance of your vehicle...
