1991 Jeep Comanche Sport Truck 4.0L inline 6 cyl high output
Summary:
An excellent reliable truck
Faults:
Clutch slave defective after the first year - replaced under warranty.
Both rear leaf springs replaced.
Throttle position sensor replaced.
Transfer case overhaul due to Chrysler service neglect.
No other problems outside of general maintenance.
General Comments:
The performance of this truck, both in engine (190hp) and handling are excellent. Low end torque is great - takes nothing to smoke the tires, high end torque is harder to come by though - passing on the highway isn't the greatest.
After nine years and 250K, the engine is still running as good as new (oil change every 5K), the clutch, radiator, alternator, etc. are still original.
The ride can be harsh on rough surfaces. Off road capability is excellent - have driven through many trails and through shallow rivers in outback Newfoundland.
Very simply designed - easy to work on yourself.
Really tough on gas though, this is not an economy truck (removing the tailgate for highway driving makes a big difference).
Overall, it's been an excellent first vehicle that I predict will last at least a few years yet.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

I have a 1990 Jeep Comanche, 4X4 short bed.
I had to replace my throttle sensor. The engine would go way up on rpm's, then the rpm's would come back down. The Jeep never did stall. Sometimes the rpm's would go way too high. The only way I could get the rpm's down was to turn the key to off. Not running the engine. I replaced the throttle sensor. That solved the problem.
Your injectors can make your Jeep stall. If you have not had the injectors cleaned, that will make your Jeep stall. Then a MAP sensor will make your engine stall.
I put a chemical into my gas tank before I fill up the tank with gas. I think the chemical is called 44k. You will be paying around $22.00 dollars for the 44k. My Jeep gets about 26 miles to the gallon.
People have asked me to sell my Jeep to them. I am like most of you, I love my 1990 Jeep Comanche. I have never been stuck either.
So next year I will have my Jeep painted. Then re-do the interior. Also I'll put a high performance computer in my Jeep. That makes a lot difference.
Thank you.

To March 7, 2006 poster, did you get any results on your stalling on acceleration issue? Mine is beginning to do the same thing. Oxygen sensor? PCV unit possibly? I too have done the tune-ups and all. Runs great, 4.0 HO 1991, but beginning to sputter on acceleration. Thanks.
