My ten years with this excellent off road vehicle proves the value of proper maintenance.
The first repair was a rear brake caliper at 76,437 miles. Air Conditioner needed 2 new 'O' rings at 118,343 miles. Replaced front axle boots and seals at 127,158 miles. The exhaust system needed repair at 139,614 miles I installed all new using a stainless steel Basani 'Cat-Back' unit. Replaced AC evaporator and condenser at 169,602 miles along with the original radiator. All other work was maintenance. I have changed the oil 43 times using only synthetic.
The vehicle runs as well at current mileage as it did when new. The V-8 is more than powerful enough.
The optional leather seats were worth the money because they have lasted for almost 10 years showing little wear and still are supportive and comfortable.
The 'Up-Country' suspension, 'Trac-Lock' differentials, and larger AT tires the factory supplied with those options work extremely well, off road.
Factory parts are ridiculously expensive and should be avoided when possible. Case in Point is the fog lights, each replaceable from an auto supply for $ 10 or 15 dollars. Jeep charges $ 104.00 for one.
I live in a state that uses road salt in winter, and the vehicle has never been garaged. Rust is beginning to show through at the bottom of the metal tailgate. My previous Jeep Cherokee had a fiberglass rear gate. That would have been a better choice.

A low performance nightmare!!!
Engine died at 110,000 miles
Transmission died at 112,500 miles.

Looks only, no off road performance!
Replaced Emergency Brakes 40,000.
Replaced Starter 55,000.
Transmission/Transfer case leaks 72,000.
Infinity Stereo System failed 105,000.
Replaced Radiator 116,000.
Replaced # 6 cylinder/valve job 130,000.
The vehicle looks and runs great between major breakdowns! Not as reliable as my 97 Cherokee or 94 Wrangler. I would have been better off to not take this vehicle off road!
I would buy another Grand Cherokee, but only for town driving. Not designed for off road!
Gas miles per gallon is 18 highway 14 town.

After reading the above comments, I will agree that maybe you might consider taking a course in off road driving.
I am the proud owner of a 94 GC Limited with the 318 V-8, Q-trac, leather interior, power everything, and auto trans. This Jeep can, and I have done cat 5 trails with it without any mods.
I also have owned a 1990 Cherokee with the 4.0L and 5 speed, and a 1983 AMC/Jeep Eagle 4x4 wagon.
Yes I did cat 5 trails with all my Jeeps, including the Eagle as it has the CJ-7 drivetrain.
This Jeep replaced the EAGLE.
Yeah, my 1994 Grand Cherokee 4.0L I6 is a BEAST off road. It sure can take a beating. I've taken it through 3 feet of water and pits of mud that looked crazy to even attempt to drive through them, but it never got stuck. You just have to practice and learn the right maneuvers, gear shifts, whether to be in full-time or 4lo etc.

I have to agree with the comments above mine. My 1994 Grand Cherokee Limited performs off-road better than a lot of cars I see with lifts. I take mine mudding, or trail riding at least twice a week and never have problems, and it is still completely stock and over 130,000 miles. I love the capabilities of this car, and planning on bigger tires and a lift. I would have to agree and say you probably just need more experience.
