1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2L

Summary:

Excellent vehicle

Faults:

I have owned this vehicle since 1995 and have had the usual automotive recalls - occasional. One was not applied the brake shift interlock as it is used off road and rocking is a useful tool to unstick a vehicle.

With respect to quality -

The heater barndoor malfunctioned at mile 220000 and have tried to have it repaired twice - this is a known jeep flaw.

The a/c drain backed up into the passenger floor board - repaired and no further problems.

The oil pressure has increased suggesting sludge in the flow system - no surprise with 240000 miles on the vehicle.

Had to repair the transfer case lynch pin due to miss shift on my part.

The jeep gets 19-21 mpg on short haul highway driving and up to 26 mpg on the open road.

City driving gas miles about 13-14.

General Comments:

Would not trade it and trying to upgrade it!

Have since bought another jeep and it too seems very good.

It comes down to maintenance I think and without it any vehicle will fall apart.

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Orvis Edition 5.2 liter V8

Summary:

Amazing performance and reliability

Faults:

A week after I purchased my Jeep the coolant system needed to be completely replaced, as well as the wiring for the tow package.

Two years later I needed to replaced the front axle shaft assemblies & right front hub & bearing assembly.

General Comments:

There did not appear to be any serious work completed on this Jeep when we purchased it, but it has performed very well over the last 83000 miles.

Comfortable and reliable, I still don't hesitate to take it on a road trip. The last three vehicles I've had have been a Toyota (still running at 254000 miles) and Chevy Lumina (finally called it quits at 230000 miles).

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 6 cylinder

Summary:

I have a love hate relationship with it. Love to drive it, hate fixing it

Faults:

Starter went at 103K right after I bought it.

Had transmission rebuilt at 115K.

Transmission sensor went at 133K.

Replaced catalytic converter at 125K.

I've had to replace yellowed headlights.

A/C doesn't work.

Rear wiper motor had to be replaced at 120K.

The replaced you joints, track bar, drag link, and ball joints at 125K and now it's going in the shop AGAIN because the suspension in the front is crunching.

General Comments:

Okay, with an older vehicle I expected some replacement issues on parts that wear out. So in my list of things gone wrong, I haven't included the brakes, the muffler, the tires, the battery, things of that nature that I have had to replace on the truck. To a certain degree, it is to be expected.

But in 1 1/2 years I've owned the truck, I've had to put $6K in it. You always hear people saying "your going to pay more in maintenance on a Jeep" but I just do not think $6K in 1 1/2 years is what a typical Jeep owner pays, or do they? I guess that is the question!

I can see why Jeep owners LOVE Jeep. Despite the fact I've cried over my pocketbook, these trucks are awesome fun. Especially off-road. Very comfortable ride, lots of cargo room, excellent handling where it was meant to be ~ in the mud, snow and rain. It's managed every hill, turn, and obstacle. Being 11 years old, it still looks good and very sporty.

The previous owner had it since new and he was very good about maintenance (oil changes etc). The engine still runs strong for me. Honestly, you drive down the road and you will see a ton of these Jeeps in this year range STILL on the road. So, yes, lots of problems, but we're all still fixing them and keeping them on the road.

That must say something about how much we love to drive them.

Oh, and about the bad gas mileage. My truck seemed to have better than average gas mileage when I bought it (16 city - 20 highway) I replaced the stock catalytic converter and muffler with "affordable" Dynomax performance parts and I now get 18 city - 26 highway.
