Faults:

General wear and tear.

Alternator went bad at 143000 ($45 at a junkyard no problems since)

Rear hatch shock.

Rear hatch door handle.

A few speakers here and there (my fault... The infinity audio system has great thump)

Front differential blew (due to lack of maintenance by first owner...who ran without differential fluid)

General Comments:

Overall it's a great truck handles better than you'd expect out of an SUV (never worried about rolling in any situation I've put it in)

Great dependable first car for anyone.

Good vehicle if your looking for an off-road truck base vehicle.

Faults:

The power antenna does not fully retract.

On the information console it tells me that I have a blown lamp (tail light) but the tail light works fine.

The radiator leaks, and it needs service on the rear disk brakes already.

General Comments:

Overall the Jeep is a very good investment especially if you live back east or colorado or some place that has large snow falls in the winter

Iv'e used my Jeep several times to volunteer to take Doctors and Nurses to work during Blizzards because during snow emergencies 4x4's are the only vehicles allowed on most Pennsylvania roads in the winter.

Faults:

Needed new front and rear rotors, and brakes.

Rear wiper motor doesn't work.

Rear hatch won't open.

Crank shaft gone! (Need new engine!!)

Transmission was done (Previous owner)

Gets really hot on your feet when driving. (No heat is on)

Gas mileage is $hit!

Faults:

AC condenser drain clogged a week after I got it, fixed with a drill, a coat hanger, and some JB Weld.

Water pump and radiator at 105000.

Exhaust manifold cracked.

Power steering pump pulley cracked.

General Comments:

Sure my Jeep has had its problems, but I bought it with a lot of miles on it, and luckily was able to do all the repairs myself, so it saved me a ton of cash.

Since I bought it, I've put 20000 miles on it, so the keep up costs are low.

The good: lots of room inside and under the hood, good torque and pulling power, easy to lift.

Since I bought the car, I've done a full exhaust system on it, new intake, fog lights, suspension lift, tires, and a bumper trim.

Faults:

Had to have the A/C evaporator replaced. The drain for this runs into the frame rail and cannot be cleaned out, thus resulting in water staying trapped in the ductwork and causing corrosion. I have since drilled a hole in the vehicle interior plastic ductwork where the drain is to clean it out (and subsequently plug)

Rear window wiper has stopped, likely due to corrosion on the wiper shaft.

Catalytic converter had to be replaced when purchased.

Replaced most seals between 160-190,000 to include: front and rear pinion, rear main, intake, exhaust, front and rear T-Case, rear transmission. These parts wear and replacement was expected.

Radio had to be replaced, amplifier was damaged in A/C replacement (don't ask how)

General Comments:

The Grand Cherokee is absolutely a great vehicle if you are a car aficionado and have some mechanical aptitude. If you expect every little electrical gadget and plastic piece to operate as if it were new then you should look elsewhere.

With a little proper attention and regular maintenance I've put over 30,000 hard miles on my ZJ in the last year. It's been driven hard off-road and fast down rough dirt roads. These same roads have destroyed Camaros, Eclipses, Miatas, sedans and even pickup trucks with their washboard turf in less than 6 months. All of my Jeeps have worn just fine.

The 5.2 V8 has good power, it's a time proven reliable engine and well suited to the Grand. The NP249 T case has also been great, especially on road with the full time 4 wheel drive. Someday I may have to replace the viscous coupling, but with 200,000 it still works fine.

Overall the stuff that really matters is very reliable. The unibody work great, the suspension and drive-train hold up. The V8 shows little sign of wear. No other SUV I've had has held up this well.
