1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2

Summary:

One satisfied Jeep owner

Faults:

Rear windshield wiper screw-cover has chipped/broken off about a week after I bought the Jeep. Had an aftermarket sound system professionally installed, and in the process (I was watching,) discovered that where the rear drivers side seat lifts up, hinge seems to have come disconnected. This is not a major problem, seat still closes OK. Transmission sometimes is a little slow to shift, especially after passing cars on the highway at around 65-70mph. Sometimes shifts with a slight clunking noise at below 30.

General Comments:

Strong acceleration, pulls much harder than my last car. This Jeep is a gold/brown color with the gold rims, and even though it's not a brand new car, it still gets a lot of looks. I am 6'2 and this is comfortable for me, even with the sunroof. I have had the pleasure to take my Jeep off road 3 times now, and even with stock everything, it does a wonderful job. I am not afraid to take this anywhere.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L

Summary:

I couldn't ask for anything more

Faults:

The brakes and rotors have been a problem. I have replaced two sets since I have owned this vehicle. The fuel pump sending unit quit working properly at about 90,000 miles. This was an easy fix though. The part, from the dealer, was only $25.00. Other than these small problems, the Grand Cherokee has been a great SUV in all respects.

General Comments:

I bought this vehicle for the purpose of having a strong four wheel drive that could still accommodate my family. It has far exceeded my expectations. I have taken this vehicle through trails most people wouldn't even dream of. It has reliably taken me everywhere, and I mean everywhere, I have wanted to go. To this day, I can't believe I have not had anything major go wrong. The Grand Cherokee is a tank. Treat it good and it will treat you like a king!

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado 4.0 liter

Summary:

High maintenance, poor gas mileage

Faults:

Front seat had to be repaired due to defect in seat frame, covered under warranty Brakes pads and rotors front and rear. Front done on recall. Front stabilizer bushings replaced at 33,000. Fuel system failure due to fungus growth in tank which caused pump failure. It appears on the 94 Larado there is a problem with fungus growth in the tank which will lead to pump failure. If you have had pump failure and have not cleaned out tank problem may repeat. Tank should be flushed and cleaned with bleach. This is safety issue and I think a recall is in order. My car failed on major road and had to to towed.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.3L I-6

Summary:

Some problems, but satisfied with the car

Faults:

I do not know what was wrong with it if anything before 97,000. When I bought it, it was in the shop being inspected at the dealers order.

At 98,000, the transmission went. The check engine light came on and the car would not go above 3000 RPMs. You would have to manually shift the auto transmission for it to run properly. The mechanic said they would replace for $2000 or do patchwork on it for $500. We did patchwork and so far it is fine.

It is in the shop now because there are random knocks, pings, and chirps from the fan belt. Cost to fix is $150.

They test drove my Jeep and called me saying there were oil leaks. They recommended a change in the valve cover, front crank seal, and rear main seal. Total cost for these: $900.

They recommend a throttle body service due to carbon buildup. Price: $150. However, I can go elsewhere and get that service for cheaper.

They then came out and said that there was noise in the rear. They want to replace the rear differential. Cost: $975!!!

When the car is in park, when I put my foot on the brake and shift to drive, the car seems to lurch forward (although it doesn't start rolling), like it wants to go. This does not occur often though.

In summary, right now, a $200 job has turned into a $2300 job.

General Comments:

I like my Jeep and we have not had any major problems so far. I would consider purchasing another one in the future. The only bad thing is the cost for repairs.

When the car is in park and you shift to D and it lurks forward, it means you haven't depressed the brake pedal enough. Just different brake pedals are adjusted different. My 93 never did this, but 98 does if I'm not careful. Not a big prob though;)
