Summary:

Not too sure about this vehicle

Faults:

Driver side window motor burned out- had to replace.

Rear power lock slips and doesn't "catch" when operated.

Speed sensor replaced.

Front brakes squeak at times. Front rotors re-surfaced twice.

General Comments:

Very comfortable car. Gas mileage could be better. Automatic transmission has poor performance and poor shifting at times. Dodge/Jeep have a history of reliability problems including rear ends wearing out and transmission problems.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Special Edition 4.0

Summary:

Very large in the aftermarket

Faults:

The only Part I have had to replace was a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). It began giving bad readings on the throttle position resulting in an erratic idle. This was replaced at approximately 68,000 miles.

There is a tear in the leather on the driver's seat. This is due from exiting, mainly and is from the seat folding over the plastic trim.

General Comments:

I bought the Jeep in 2 wheel drive, a Laredo Special Edition, which gives the basis of the Limited package. I loved the Jeep from the first day. I used it to flat tow our '73 CJ5, and it did an excellent job with the 4.0 6 cylinder giving strong and reliable performance.

After being involved in a traffic accident, I decided to convert the Jeep over to 4 wheel drive. I did so, and have since enjoyed the flexibility of it and have discovered the multitudes of parts that are interchangeable between models.

I love this Jeep. It is comfortable. The ride is firm with the lift, but not harsh by any standard.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L V6

Summary:

A waste of time

Faults:

My under body started to spring leaks all over the place. I mean every seal, gasket etc. This happened 3,000 miles after purchase. $3,600 covered by Warranty. 63,000 miles.

My interior lighting went crazy, off and on, and on and off. 2 Dealers later and no effort to find problem and no solution at this point. 70,000 miles.

Power windows in back seat have gone down on their own. Very concerned with electrical system at this point. Getting electrical shocks when I touch the car. Dealer says nothing wrong. 74,000 miles.

Transmission went at 76,000 miles. $2,000 fix.

Engine knock and believed Engine rod problem. I don't even want to know. 80,000 miles. For Sale.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I also have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee which I purchased about 8 months ago. I really like this vehicle. Compared to the 1992 Grand Am I have been driving for 5 years this truck is a dream.. I too have had severe problems with shock when I enter and exit this vehicle. I thought maybe it was just me. I noticed also that the interior lights on the dash will flicker every once in a while and my back up lights do not work. I have had several mechanics look at it and tell me nothing is wrong still it is a little concerning to know that someone else had the same issues. I recently noticed that the trany will run to 3,000RPM and then I let off the gas as if to shift it and it drops to normal.

Overall I still love this thing and I would purchase another one just brand new next time. I think it always helps when you are the first owner because you know your vehicle better.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

Summary:

It's a nice large solid automobile and I feel very safe driving it

Faults:

The only fault I can truly find with my Jeep is the fact that the gas mileage is not that great. I am only averaging around 15 miles per gallon.

General Comments:

I have been truly happy with my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Other than having a flat tire and taking it in for service (for recalls), I have never had a problem with it and I've owned it almost four years.

It is wonderful in the snow and for hauling items to and from our homes.

It is a reliable car, with a nice ride and good acceleration on the highway.

I used to run regular gas in my 1998 Jeep 4.0L, but then heard that it was a high compression engine. I switched to mid-grade gas (89 octane) and have gotten another 2mpg out of it. The extra miles pay the difference in gas price and this has been proven on multiple tanks of gas. It also quiets the valve tapping. Anyone using super for gas? I guess I'll try that next. Other than that, it's a superb vehicle.
