1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo V6

Faults:

My 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee had this same problem with leaking. I was told that this car's AC drains into the unibody, and a repair shop drilled a hole I thought that they said in the unibody, but nothing came out, so they recommended the $800 A/C job. I know that they had to take the dash out to get to the drainage hose, but I don't get the part about it draining in the unibody.

Anyway, now my backseats are completely molded. I was going to trade and just lose money, but now that I know what the repair should be, I will have to see if it is worth fixing the problem.

General Comments:

This was a great car and in great shape, but I immediately started having issues. Thank God I bought a warranty, because it has had to have a lot of major work.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 5.2L

Summary:

Nice ride, but expensive drive train fixes

Faults:

Both front brake rotors replaced.

Emergency brake repaired.

Front differential bearings replaced.

Rear differential bearings replaced.

Both sides front wheel bearings replaced.

General Comments:

Nice interior, and the exterior body is in decent shape.

5.2L engine runs strong, and not bad gas mileage; 17 avg mpg for a large heavy vehicle.

Drive train costs big bucks to repair. Expected some repairs on this used vehicle, but not all of the ones I had at once.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.9L/360 CID

Summary:

Perfect blend of utility, function, and fun!

Faults:

Coolant sensor bad.

Gear shift lever detent lock (covered by recall notice).

Wouldn't officially call it something going wrong, but after purchase, did a complete visual inspection and service on the front and rear diffs, transmission, transfer case, all filters, all fluids changed, and flushed/filled radiator. Also replaced front rotors, as this is a typical problem area for ZJ's.

The vehicle has been extremely reliable and very fun to drive!

General Comments:

I am another happy, extremely satisfied 5.9L owner, and can say that this Jeep is everything I require out of a vehicle for utility (okay, so it can't tow my 38' fifth wheel LOL), since it can simultaneously tow 5,500# behind it and haul my family and all of our gear on vacation, and also that it has an unstoppable 4-wheel drive system.

Add to it, that even as a 2+ ton SUV, it is faster than many cars in a straight line, and it's an unbeatable combination. A true "Sport Utility Vehicle"; capable of tackling any trail, hauling anything the average person would need it for, so simple it can be worked on by the average Joe for basic mechanical repairs and maintenance, and has a touch of "Hot Rod" thrown into the mix!

A little long in the tooth now as an 11-year old vehicle, yes, but mine has 134k miles and has never let me down, as I am a stickler for maintenance.

I plan on getting another one in the near future to keep 100% stock (with the exception of the stereo system), as I'm about to do a complete performance engine build on my current one; in a nutshell going to stroke the 360 CID/5.9L engine into a 408/6.7L and upgrade the tranny to handle the increased power I'll have at my disposal! A true sleeper that is going to surprise many more unsuspecting people than it already does!!!

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.9L gas

Summary:

Great performance, great handling, excellent 4x4. Great braking

Faults:

I bought this car for under wholesale as is. I was aware of the repairs needed when I bought it.

2-freeze plugs

Timing cover gasket

Alternator

2 U-joints

But I drove this Jeep 120 miles home the day I bought it & it ran great.

General Comments:

This Jeep is FAST. Fuel mileage is not as bad as I thought it might be. It runs great on mid-grade fuel, even though it calls for premium. I get 14-18 MPG.

This Jeep is a serious 4x4. The Quadra-track is great both on & off road. The wife took it to the mountains & found herself driving faster in the windy roads that she ever has with other SUVs. She said the Jeep stuck to the road & handled great. Off-road it will out climb our Blazer 4x4 & most 4x4s we have ever owned.
