Faults:

Since 140k, new radiator, power steering pump, water pump, main belt, various suspension work, A/C serviced twice (still needs service), new transmission at 203k.

General Comments:

Comfy car, big and heavy. Fairly reliable, but watch out at high miles.

That being said, this car has been a good car for us. We knew when we bought it that with high miles it would need lots of TLC.

I will say I am surprised that even though we seemed to blow through pumps pretty quickly, the engine held up solid. In fact, I was willing to sell the car at 203k when the transmission quit, but my parents replaced it for me. I think they are hoping to keep the car after I buy one soon.

Amazingly, I haven't ever "tuned up" the engine. I've just changed the oil every 4k and once every 4 tanks of gas added Lucas gas treatment. Most service guys have told us "the 4.0L is a tank". I agree, even with 206k, it starts strong even in the winter.

I just wish I could get the AC to hold up. We now need to change the evaporator (cost is $800 - yikes!).

Also, look out for gas mileage, this car loves to guzzle gas. Still cushy seats with power and heated everything is great in the winter, and this car is awesome in snow and rain. I once drove an hour and a half through the snow to my parents house at 60mph with 4WD. The car feels very confident.

For an American late 90's car, this Jeep's not shabby.

Faults:

Replaced radiator at 160,000 miles.

Replaced brakes twice in about 110,000 miles.

Replaced electric cooling fan around 160,000 miles.

Replaced all tie rods and tie rod ends in 2007.

Replaced water pump in around 140,000 miles.

Differentials have always whined a little louder than you would like.

General Comments:

This Jeep is extremely powerful and quick.

Very comfortable to drive.

Never needed any major work, just routine work for the most part.

Parts are reasonably priced.

I have been able to average 20MPGs at 70-75MPH highway driving.

It does require high octane fuel, but it's worth it.

Faults:

Engine stalls or cuts off for a moment randomly. Removed ECU, and cut 1/8 inch off of cover screws. Hasn't stalled since.

Headlight cells coming loose. Disassembled, cleaned grooves, re-glued with RTV and reassembled.

Gas springs for rear door and window need replacing.

Electric locks intermittently fail to lock.

A/C condensate on passenger floor.

General Comments:

Good gas economy (22-24 MPG on highway).

Wind noise (aftermarket moonroof mostly to blame.)

Good handling.

Faults:

Radiator at about 130,000.

Water pump shortly after.

Starter at 140,000.

Driver seat spring collapsed. Found another at auto wreckers.

A/C compressor bearing went at 145,000.

Wheel bearing worn out on drivers time also around 145,000.

IAC, TPS, and MAP at 164,000.

Alternator at 169,000.

General Comments:

I can't complain about this Jeep. The things that have went bad on it are normal wear and tear parts (for the most part). I tend to go through brakes almost every 18 months, which is fine, and tires almost every year. But that is from constant highway driving. This Jeep performs amazingly off-road in the mud, gravel, and rocky terrains. The snow and ice are also no competition for the Jeep as well. Even when I have to stop in the slick snow, the ABS rarely kicks it.

I added some extras to my Jeep, including a K&N cold air intake system, 62mm throttle body, Gibson exhaust manifold, Magnaflow catalytic converter, Flowmaster Delta 40 Series Muffler, and 3 inch exhaust piping. It definitely helped give the I6 a lot of extra torque.

All in all, the Grand Cherokee runs great. No leaks, doesn't burn oil, nothing out of the ordinary. I am hesitant to buy another Grand Cherokee since the I6 is not made anymore. These engines are bulletproof and so easy to work on. And the parts aren't too expensive as well. At the same time, I don't beat my Jeep either. I take good care of it. And besides routine maintenance and normal wear and tear, the Grand Cherokee doesn't owe me a dime.
