1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee SE 5.2

Summary:

Sold for life!

Faults:

Well I personally enjoy having this car, and even though it may be a little more maintenance than a Toyota or Honda, it's worth it to me.

The only problem that I have had with it, is sometimes in the morning when the engine is a little cold, it will make this funny whining or whistling noise, but then it always goes away, so I'm not sure what it is. Other than that, I think it's an amazing SUV.

The 5.2 engine is faster than the BMW X5, and they are about half the cost of an X5, so I'm pretty impressed. They are also amazing at towing!

If anyone has any tips or pointers about owning a Jeep for me, then I would appreciate all e-mails! Rideblue86@aol.com

Michael.

General Comments:

I think it's one of the best American made cars that you can buy, especially for an SUV.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L I6

Summary:

Probably the best SUV on the road!

Faults:

Radiator went at 130,000 miles.

Wheel bearing went on drivers side at 145,000 miles, so I replaced both of them.

Exhaust manifold cracked (common problem with the In-line 6)

Replaced intake manifold with exhaust manifold since I had it already removed.

General Comments:

I really beat this car since I am a Penn State student in State College. I drive a little over 200 miles every three weeks to come home to visit family, and another 200 miles to get back home.

I knew that since I was moving to an area with a lot of snow, my Lincoln Town Car just wasn't going to cut it. So I went out and bought the Jeep Grand Cherokee since I see a lot of the ZJ's still on the road today, which leads me to believe that they are reliable vehicles.

I must say, I am very pleased with it. Besides normal wear and tear and one common Jeep problem (the cracked exhaust manifold), this Jeep doesn't owe me a dime. The parts for it are expensive, but with how easy it is to work on, I just buy the parts and do the work myself.

Climbing up the Appalachian Mountains is no problem with this workhorse. The 4.0L I6 still has tons of power to climb up the mountain with ease. The Selec-Trac 4WD is very dependable and works perfectly.

I am very pleased with this vehicle and wouldn't hesitate to buy another. It is unfortunate that Chrysler does not make the In-line 6 anymore. But then again, there is always the Hemi!

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2WD, LE 5.2L

Summary:

Love it when all works well

Faults:

My interior lights including overhead, dash, and the exterior lights began flashing on and off unexpectedly last night.

Horn alarm went off without intrusion to car at 75000 miles.

Paint on front bumper and hood is oxidizing from excessive heat generated by engine.

Locks on all doors do not automatically lock when key fob is used. Doors often remain open and unlocked and won't open without manual key insertion to open doors. Alarm system however, works without problem if door is accidently opened before system is disengaged.

General Comments:

Enjoy driving the car and have maintained regular maintenance.

V-8 engine is a serious plus for driving in Arizona heat.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Summary:

Lots of trouble

Faults:

Needed a new exhaust manifold at 85000 miles. They told me "these Jeeps always need a manifold"

New transmission at 89000 miles. Still makes loud humming noise and not a smooth switch into new gears.

No cold air in the Jeep for 3 years. I have taken it to dealership -- they have added freon 5 times -- always telling me they couldn't find a leak. Would stay cold about a week -- then blow hot air. Switched to different garages -- have spent $1850, but no one is able to get cold air in the Jeep. The last garage let me watch while they put dye through -- found a leak -- fixed it; cost $2.78 for that. Stayed cold 3 weeks, I turned off air one evening -- now no cold air again. I've replaced compressor, evaporator, hoses to "dryer".. or supposedly. Nothing has helped.

Stereo stopped working 3 years ago -- only picks up AM.

General Comments:

Have enjoyed this vehicle -- EXCEPT the no cold air -- it is extremely uncomfortable in summer. I could tolerate the other troubles, but will sell it simply because of having NO AIR.

And it only gets about 17mpg. I could tolerate that... just no air.
