1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 I-6

Summary:

Lovable car with aftermarket rotors

Faults:

Within one week of my purchase of this vehicle as a lease return, my fuel pump gasket went. The dealer immediately took care of this problem for no charge.

About four months in, at around 50k miles, the parking break stopped functioning. The dealer took care of that under warranty, sans deductible.

About the same time, as everybody else on this board has had problems with, my car started shaking violently going down hills under hard breaking. I read these reviews, bought aftermarket rotors and pads for about $300, replaced them myself, and have never had a problem since.

Recently, at 80k, my catalytic converter became clogged - from my previous automotive experience (6 American cars, one Volvo), this seems pretty standard.

My airbag light came on around 60k, dealer turned it off at no charge to me, saying that one of the connecting pins had bent.

I replace the serpentine belt at 70k; couldn't have been easier. I recommend that everyone who owns one replaces it themselves and saves $100. It took me less than 5 minutes, and only required one tool - a large socket drive.

General Comments:

I'm quite fond of this vehicle. Though the quality isn't on par with something out of Japan, it is consistent with most American vehicles, and is quite likable.

I have a strong desire for leather seats, even though the cloth is very supportive.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 6 cylinder

Summary:

Excellent value and comfortable ride

Faults:

Front Brake Rotors warped almost every 10k miles from the time I got it. Replaced by dealer, but it continued to come back till I replaced them with cryogenic frozen rotors.

Electric cooling fan relay failed at 60k miles running the battery dead.

Both front and rear output seals on the transfer case leaked. one at 60k miles and the other at 90k miles.

Rear door seals have shrunk and pulled away from their mounts creaking wind leaks.

General Comments:

For the first year of this redesign I have been impressed with how reliable this Jeep Grand Cherokee has been.

The sienna paint still shines like new and the interior shows no wear.

It is expensive to maintain, i.e., getting all the fluids changed every 30-45k miles, but you need to do it or expect it to break down the road.

Quadra Drive makes more noise on highway than Select Trac does. But it never slips a bit in bad weather.

Starter replaced after 2 months of owning vehicle.

Fuel pump replaced within the first 3 months.

Left-rear door lock replaced after making grinding noises within 1 year.

Right-rear door lock replaced after making grinding noises within 1.3years.

Manifold recall by dealership.

General Comments:

The interior seems to be falling apart.

The door panels are coming loose.

The door locks on this vehicle don't last, due to the cheap plastics they use in manufacturing.

I never had a problem with the brakes at all.
