1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0

Summary:

A terrible waste of money

Faults:

Transmission has loud Clunk when shifting from park to reverse.

Fuel pump check valve failure at 48000 miles.

Rear differential rebuilt at 45000 miles.

Various other minor items.

General Comments:

This SUV has performed quite poorly since I purchased it 6 months ago. It has been riddled with faults and problems, costing me and Jeep both considerable money and time. I owned a Nissan Pathfinder for 4 years prior to this vehicle, and never experienced any problems! This car is always getting service and never is fixed properly.

What else can I say, compared to the Pathfinder, this car has terrible fuel economy, poor handling, lousy air conditioning, and unimpressive ride.

I purchased this vehicle because I was considering buying a boat, and felt the Jeep would pull it well. I'm afraid to put a boat on the back of this thing now, as it may only compound the faulty manufacturing of this vehicle and create more issues.

DO NOT PURCHASE A JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE!!!

Unless you want to spend lots of money and time at your local dealer service department!

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lorado 4.0

Summary:

Still my favorite SUV

Faults:

The only problems that I have had with my 1999 Jeep GC was the speed sensor and the typical front rotor problem.

The speed sensor went around 50,000 miles and at the time I thought it was the transmission. A local tech also pointed a finger in that direction. After going to a "real" transmission shop I found out that it was indeed the sppen sensor. The speed sensor is what sends the computer info on how fast you are drive, rpms, etc. If faulty then your Jeep will not shift or will shift incorrectly. I had a professional put in a high proformance speed sensor (about $500) and the problem has become non existent. It's always best to go to a professional instead of the local guy if you want the job done correctly.

Also**Your rotor problems. The Dealer obviously does not care about our 1999 Jeep GC problem so please do what I did. I got a pair of Raybestos powerstop rotors and brake pads. These are going to total about $300. That's about $100 for each rotor and about $50 for the pads (dealer charges $275 for pads) and about $50 for the shipping.

This will fix your problems!! I went from changing the rotors every other oil change to almost forgetting I ever had a problem with them. Do yourself and your Jeep a favor and get them!!

General Comments:

My point? Stop driving with poorly made rotors. Jump once again into the seat of the SUV that is better then any other on the road today. Minus that rotor problem that you now know how to fix.

Hello there. I have a 1999 GC Laredo I purchased about a month ago from a dealer and realized after buying it that it has a strange problem. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd and the rpms are around 2500 it hesitates, rpms go up a bit and then shifts.

Only does it when rpms are around 2500. Not any higher or any lower. Mechanics are having a hard time figuring out the problem, but the tranny shop I took it to say its definitely not the tranny. Was this a similar problem to what you were having with the speed sensor?? If not, can this problem be tied into that speed sensor?? Please email me if you get this message to HamiltonRC8@cs.com. Thanks!!

I'm having the same problem now at 50,000+ miles on my 1999 GC Laredo -- rough shifting as I start up and go from 2nd to Drive. The dealership checked out the transmission the first time and "reset the transmission" for $400. All was well for about a week, then the same thing started again. The second trip in to the shop they couldn't find anything wrong, but reset the transmission again. It was fine for about a week and now it has the same problem. They said they were checking with Jeep and would call me when they had an answer, but it couldn't be a sensor because the Check Engine light would come on. I called today to see if anything had changed -- I assured that Detroit was working on my problem, but they admitted they were currently clueless. They couldn't tell me what I got for my $400 either. How badly am I getting jerked around?
