2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 6 cylinder

Summary:

Excellent

Faults:

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited rear wheel drive. Three years living in Maine and Massachusetts, and all other years in North Carolina... this vehicle have been surprisingly pleasant and worry free.

Routine oil changes, one spark plug change, one transmission change, one radiator flush, one or two air filter, third set of tires - bent a rim, my fault but corrected with wheel weights by cleaver mechanic.

106,000 miles had the original brake pads and rotors replaced for roughly $650. Not bad investment.

Today at 147,000 after six weeks of working to discover where the leak is in A/C losing freon, I am having the evaporator core, dryer, and perhaps heater core replaced for $1,300.00. Had a great mechanic work twice on the A/C including completely recharging for no cost to me twice... Not bad for a little over 8 years on the road.

General Comments:

There are other items such as belts that are original and will probably need to be changed at some point, a tiny seepage around the transmission pan (the gasket needs to be replaced), and a gasket here or there that needs to be replaced in the next year or so.

For the money and the usage we have gotten out of this vehicle it has been well worth the investment in the repairs to date.

Now shopping for new Grand Cherokees... well the current models, actually dating back to 2002 all look like junk inside and the body shaping looks too boxy. So we'll stick to what we have and cross the repairs as we go along. It is still cheaper than a new car purchase, and why lease?

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0

Summary:

Love the Jeep. Wish I knew they had so many problems before buying

Faults:

Bought the Jeep used in December 2008.

Front dash speakers blown.

120,000 new shocks in front.

Also radiator fan relay went at 120000. Replaced that.

Now at 125000 the rear axle seals are leaking.

Car also thumps in the front end, which I'm guessing is the warped rotors everyone is talking about.

6 disc CD changer is no longer working.

Front end makes a clunking noise over bumps (thought it was the shocks).

General Comments:

Very nicely designed inside.

Looks awesome when shined up.

Sound system rocks once the front speakers are replaced.

Very safe feeling in snow storms.

Feels like you're inside a tank in a good way.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 8 cylinder

Summary:

Would never buy a Jeep again

Faults:

Had rotors, pads replaced 3 times, calipers once at 40,000 miles.

Passenger window motor died, 2 weeks later drivers door window died.

Now the malfunction light is on and they will not give me an inspection until I spend $100 to find out why the light is on.

I thought my Ford Explorer was a lemon with its tran problems that started at 16,000 miles (3 transmissions), but this Jeep is becoming a very expensive problem.

General Comments:

Time to look for a Honda or Toyota. They stand behind their vehicles and have better warranties. No wonder US car manufacturers are in trouble.

Yes, and on this same site you'll find people complaining about their Hondas & Toyotas, also grumbling that those companies need to "stand behind" their products.

The grass is always...

My 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee is running fine after 16 years and 150K miles! I had to do some mid-size repairs (leaking gaskets, water pump) between 75,000 and 100,000 miles. Jeeps tend to run great (like mine) or have problems (like this person's 2001).

This hit-and-miss quality makes me think twice about buying the awesome new 2011 Grand Cherokee (assuming the bankruptcy goes okay). I also have a Lexus IS 350 and it's quality is quite impressive, hence a Lexus GX may replace my '93 Jeep.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7

Summary:

Perfect balance of size and performance

Faults:

The only problems I have had is the drivers side window would not go up at about 114,000 miles. It was easily fixed by an independent service shop.

General Comments:

Car runs well, and I have always had good service from Jeep 4 wheel drives.

The car handles well on the highway, and is easy to park in town, and maneuvers well on the ranch.

I hope to drive this car another year or two, and then buy another Cherokee.
