2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8

Summary:

Good looking SUV, but poor reliability

Faults:

Rear Shocks

Flimsy Front Seats (Not very secure) Electrical Burning Odor?

Noisy Downshift.

General Comments:

This SUV Handles well and is amazing in the snow. The design and comfort of the Jeep is nice, however I would be more satisfied with better reliabily and higher quality electronic devices. I am weary of problems that I may encounter reaching 60000 miles.

I'll take you up on that. Give your Jeep to me, for nothing. Don't be surprised if I'm still driving it in 10 years.

I like the comment from #4. This person really gets it!!! I hope they have a wonderful time working at Jeep and searching all web sites to post rebuttal comments to anything negative regarding Jeep products.

Here is a writer that includes all details regarding every issue and you write

“Back it up"... I hope you are not in customer service for Jeep! Good luck with your company and future job! You might be smarter than everyone because you sit at your desk and search negative comments regarding Jeep. Go slackers.

Well, I don't work for Jeep. However, I've owned 4 of them (1 Liberty & 3 Wranglers) and all have been wonderful.

My current Wrangler is 13 years old, has 139,000 miles on it and is a fantastic little 4x4.

In fact in the past 2 years I haven't spent one dime on repairs. I change the oil regularly and keep it up to date as far as servicing it. This little Jeep is superb!

Not all Jeeps are prone to problems.

The old Cherokees & Wranglers are very reliable.

The Grand Cherokees tend to have more issues with electrics and brake rotors warping.

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7L V8

Summary:

Live Axles, Punchy V8, Strong Drive-train

Faults:

When I bought the Jeep used in February of 2004, the brakes were passable, but definitely on their way out. I replaced the brake rotors and pads in the summer of 2004. I do notice a bit of rotor warping now, nothing I can't live with. I may check into slotted rotors and ceramic pads for the next brake job.

The transmission does make a squeak when it shifts during wide open throttle acceleration. No signs of any transmission failure, though. Fluid was in good shape when I changed it.

I have had no mechanical or electrical failures with this vehicle since I've owned it.

General Comments:

The power of the 4.7L V8 is impressive. Even though it's rated at 235HP, being in a fairly light SUV makes it quicker than a heavier model with more HP. (As compared to say, a GMC Envoy with a 265HP I6.)

The transmission shifts well, and the shifts quicken up when you're under full-throttle acceleration.

I opted for the NV242 transfer case, as I prefer to control the 2WD/4WD functions myself. No problems with it, and the Full time mode is handy for wet pavement, where acceleration in 2WD is hindered with wheel spin. I've off roaded it in mud to test out the part time, and it performed fine. (My lifted 94 Bronco with posi's and mud tires obviously is more capable, but I was impressed with the stock abilities.)

The interior is well laid out, and the sound system is the best OEM system I've heard. Full compliment of gauges is nice.
