New headliner at 132,000.

Love these things! I own two and they are great!

I wish it was a little easier to find interior and exterior parts. Mechanical parts are relatively easy to find.

Wonderful vehicle for any situation!

1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer 360

Summary:

A real keeper!

Faults:

Exhaust system fell apart.

Replaced shocks with better ones due to body sway.

Rear wiper doesn't work.

Gas gauge is not accurate.

General Comments:

With good power and handsome retro-SUV looks I am glad to have picked up this Jeep. I bought it from an old couple whose son had given it to them, and I think it intimidated them. It was an obviously well maintained vehicle.

I just returned from a trip to the Catskills - 500 miles round trip - and was pleasantly surprised to get 14.2 mpg on the trip. Around town in mixed traffic I get between 11.7 and 12.3 mpg. I am very aware of gas mileage since I have to write down mileage at each fill-up as the gas gauge isn't working properly.

Not having service records, I don't know what to expect, but have been pleased with the performance and overall reliability in the short time I have had this.

I plan on getting another truck and keeping this around to work on, restore. I have big plans...

1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer 5.9

Summary:

Bargain-priced automotive icon

Faults:

Magnetic strip in the distributor failed which caused the vehicle to stall.

Engine pings after long distance driving.

General Comments:

This classic 4x4 gets approving looks wherever it goes. It feels rock solid in most driving situations.

Everything has held up rather well considering its age. Cost of repair isn't out of line. I don't see me parting with this lovely for quite some time.

Pings after long trips? Check for vacuum leaks. Try to turn your 3 vacuum switches. They shouldn't move.

It might be that air leaks are raising the combustion temperature. Check hoses. Air by-pass valves do fail. This will allow hot exhaust gas into the engine compartment which can fry hoses, spark plug wires and raise the temperature. Good luck.

1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer 5.9 L (360 CID) V-8

Summary:

The original luxury 4X4 still has class

Faults:

Carburator replaced @ 105000 miles.

Muffler and cat replaced @ 110000 miles.

Alternator replaced @ 100000 miles.

Radiator replaced @ 110000 miles.

Electronic ignition module replaced @ 65000 miles and again @ 105000 miles (a FORD part).

General Comments:

The original luxury 4X4 still has class, is a great ride and will put the newer SUV's to shame in the rough. With its leather seats, power everything, good stereo, full time transfer case and seating for six it is still the best.

1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer 360/390

Summary:

An expensive love affair, but cheaper than marriage with a better return

Faults:

Nothing serious so far. I have had the U-joints replaced in the front axle and the front driveshaft.

The rear window didn't work when I got it and it still doesn't.

I am having the gas tank support and frame repaired due to rust, a very common problem in the city because of all the winter salt.

General Comments:

I love my Jeep. This is the third jeep that I've had experience with on a long term basis. This is however the first one that I own, I specifically wanted a Grand Wagoneer for the comfort and style - love it or hate it, it does evoke an emotion when you see it, more people tell me they love it, wood siding and all.

A lot of people complain about their rear windows not working. If the switch up front and the wiring is still good you might check the little locking mechanism in the inside the tailgait. It is wired so the motor won't work if the lock isn't unlocked. The local shops said it was going to cost me an insane amount of money to rewire and fix, but I ended up fixing it myself for next to nothing. (splicing a few wires) I hope this helps out a few people.
