2009 Jeep Patriot North 4wd 2.4

Faults:

At 7000 km, water leak from rear dome light.

At 20000 km, rear caliper stuck, caliper, brake pads.

At 35000 km, rear caliper stuck, caliper, pads and rotor.

At 45000 km, bad noise from the transmission.

At 69000 km, ball joints, lateral arms, struts all gone.

At 85000 km, bad noise from the rear end.

General Comments:

Worst car I ever owned; the tranny started to make noise within 1 week of ownership, and the dealer refused to service it. Then the water leak lasted for 3 months until they could find the problem, refusing to pay for a new dome light and the headliner that was damaged.

Noise from rear end started at around 50000km; had to change rear struts, rear upper lateral arms, both toe links, had ball joint and lower control arms replaced in front. And it's not finished, it's still make noise. So far I have had about 70% of the suspension parts replaced; this is a real joke! Currently looking to get rid of it in a tradeoff!

2009 Jeep Patriot Sport 2.4

Summary:

This vehicle is continually underestimated by the mainstream press - it will surprise you

Faults:

Plastic fuel line cover came loose from the floorpan after a huge snowstorm.

General Comments:

Handling is above average for a small SUV, fuel mileage is above average, and there is a significant amount of interior space for the money.

As a Jeep enthusiast since I was a kid - I've owned 4 Jeeps - 3 Wranglers & a Liberty (currently a Wrangler).

I've got to say that I actually like the styling of the Patriot. (I really don't like what they've done to the Liberty)

I still have this Patriot, but now it is closing in on 33,000 miles. Absolutely nothing mechanically has gone wrong with this vehicle, as I have continued to let the dealer maintain it by the book. Combined fuel economy is averaging a little over 27 MPG, and it still rides/handles as it did when I first purchased it.

There has been only one other problem besides the fuel line cover: A huge gust of wind (app. 50 MPH) almost ripped the driver's side door off, which resulted in the replacement of the lower door hinge ($200 total repair from MAACO).

Otherwise, this has been one of the cheapest vehicles to operate I have ever owned (out of 54 total).

This vehicle is well built of mostly American components in Illinois. It is a shame the Italians plan to quit building this machine in Model Year 2012.

The Daimler years: Sharing of parts and loss of Jeep engineering independence. The first suspension design to bring Jeep to grocery getter status. A CVT trans is the ultimate move to kill the tradition of ability and competence.

Summary:

The Patriot is definitely the best bang for the buck

Faults:

No problems so far.

General Comments:

I wanted an affordable 4cyl engine CUV and the Patriot was the winner. I test drove Mitsubishi Outlander, Ford Escape and Hyundai Tucson before I test drove the Patriot, but the Patriot fit my budget and I liked the design. I was a bit concerned about reliability, but I haven't experienced any problem so far. It is surprisingly very good on gas and it works very well in bad weather. I feel safe in my Patriot.
