2005 Jeep TJ 4.0L
Summary:
Nice format and design for off road, but poor reliability and rustproofing
Faults:
The oil pressure distribution assembly (OPDA) caused power loss, bogging and engine would not rev more than about 2000 rpm, but was not noisy as some experienced. Chrysler dealer said the vehicle production date did not qualify for a replacement OPDA. Bought a Crown unit, but used the original sensor (as recommended by many on the internet). The gear on the OPDA was worn down about 60%. After installing the new Crown OPDA, the engine seemed to work OK. However, timing the engine was difficult and the engine will start to bog down again if I shift slightly incorrectly.
The Jeep rusts quite a bit and I had to rustproof it after body repair (fenders, windshield frame changed, door sills). The frame was still good.
I cannot yet use it reliably, just around town. Will get the engine reprogrammed by a recommended dealer if I can find one to see if its reliability may be improved.
General Comments:
I like the TJ for its maneuverability, visibility, off-road capability and sturdiness.
I have had two Cherokee XJs, two Liberty's and two Wranglers, but this TJ has poor reliability. Will try to get it repaired if possible. Still have a Liberty and two Wranglers.
