1993 Jeep Wrangler YJ 2.5 Liter

Faults:

Fuel tank gasket replaced at 120K; this was actually a "Recall" item back in the day for the '93 YJ's.

Rear differential has a tiny leak, could be just needs a new gasket.

General Comments:

This is my 3rd Wrangler. Previous ones were an '02 and an '05. Traded the '05 in for a muscle car, but missed having a go-anywhere-vehicle. In order to keep the muscle car to satisfy my displacement/speed cravings, I bought an oldie Wrangler and am having a lot of fun tinkering with it. Already had it lifted and plan to drop a small block V8 when the 4 banger dies. For its age, am surprised the little 4 is not burning oil or has any oil leaks.

1993 Jeep Wrangler 2.5L

Summary:

Not cheap, no excessive anything - it's a jeep

Faults:

Windshield seal rotted out, relplaced frame, windshield, seal etc. The nuts that the roll bar bolts on to busted off the aftermarket frame, had to weld them back on...

Replaced the dash.

Starter died.

Flipped it up on its back end climbing snow piles, didn't really damage anything though.

Knocked the exhaust off several times, finally I got sick of welding it back together and got a new one...

Some guy was driving on the wrong side of the road and hit me head on, messed up my front bumper a little, so I bent it back - all the plastic on the front of his new truck was a big ugly mess, that says somthing about new cars today - their not made to run into stuff.

Had clutch problems, which turned out to be the pilot bearing, which triggered mt transmission tearing itself to pieces.

The steering linkage is very loose, kinda scary driving at high speeds, although jeeps really are designed to be driven fast - at least on the road...

General Comments:

Built like a tank, you can run into stuff and don't have to worry about breaking it (if you don't hit it too fast that is). Its probably the most uncomfortable car I've ever owned and I love it. The interior is very old school and if you get bored you can rewire the entire thing in a day. try and do that with these new cars that have so many electronics that if something breaks, you'll never find out whats wrong...

A '93 Jeep IS cheap, especially a rusted-out example.

Summary:

I plan to part with it in my will

Faults:

Catalytic converter failed years ago. Replaced with a straight pipe. Replaced muffler and tailpipe assembly at same time.

Cowl seal has been replaced once.

Fuel pump gasket replaced.

General Comments:

If there were one word to describe this vehicle it would be "reliable". It starts first time every time and runs like it was new. Only scheduled maintenance has been performed. The four cylinder does lack power, but I have made a few minor improvements (air intake, throttle body, ignition, etc.) to help. It is driven daily to work on the interstate and does an admirable job. Does not ride great which is to be expected, but it is very stable and always feels like your in control. Still does not burn a drop of oil. I never plan to sell this vehicle because it leaves the expectations for the replacement too high and I feel that I would only long to have it back. I do plan to replace the engine with a small block Chevy to give it additional power when (don't expect it to be soon) it needs it. I have never been stuck in it nor has it ever left me stranded. Not many can say that about a vehicle after 12 years of driving it daily. It still has no rust and I live where they salt the roads regularly in winter. I love it!
