2002 Land Rover Freelander S

Summary:

The Freelander is the most capable and comfortable 4x4 I've owned, and I'm on #6!

Faults:

The intake cracked at ~2200 miles. The dealer repaired this under warranty.

The rear 12vdc receptacle came loose at ~18k miles. The dealer repaired this under warranty.

The passenger's rear window came off it's track at ~35k miles, The dealer repaired this under warranty.

The.

General Comments:

This "truck" is bullet-proof! I have had it in deep beach sand, rocky hills in excess of 40-degrees pitch, snow as high as the hood, and mud deep enough to cover the bottom of the doors. The truck has ALWAYS come through without assistance!

I've pulled loads within 350 pounds of the manufacturer's limit (from Ventura, California to Seattle, Washington) without straining the vehicle... although I followed ALL guidelines and kept to 45mph!

The truck came equipped with 'passenger car' tires... those have been replaced with P225/70R16s, which perform much better.

Glad you like the car, but I suspect a head gasket failure isn't far away...

I have owned a 2.0 liter Diesel 2002 Freelander in Australia with 5 speed manual until very recently when I moved back to the US. I have not experienced a single problem with this car and can safely say that its the best car I ever had. However, having said this I heard from others they had trouble with Freelanders with automatic transmissions.

It went through mud and snow like its bitumen and I never needed put chain on it and all this with standard tires. On top of that this car rides very comfortably and is just the right size.

The only complaint I have is that it desperately needs more ground clearance and low range transmission - this is the one thing which Landrover must address.

Otherwise, indeed a great vehicle and I would buy another one any time.

It's a crying shame that the Diesels are not available in California!

2002 Land Rover Freelander SE V6

Summary:

Nice

General Comments:

Despite getting less than favorable reviews in various publications, I cannot disagree more, even though I am 6.2" I feel comfortable, and that is considering that my model is installed with a sunroof. In regards to the interior design, even though it might not be as modern and spaceship like as many of it's competitors, I think that it is functional, timeless and easy to get used to. I never had problem finding anything. Some people complain that the hood release is in the passenger side, but considering that this car is made in the UK, where the right side is the drivers side, I would not find any problem with that. The leather seats are very comfortable, the V6 engine has more than enough power to negotiate the rough streets of LA, the AC feels fine, steering is solid, the standard sound system is more than adequate for my use. This vehicle feels very solid, it handles great and looks great. My only complaint is the loud fan noise, and the occasional indecisiveness of the transmission while driving uphill on curvy roads. This is not a problem though, as it is very easy to switch to the sport mode while driving. I really like this car, I appreciate all the handy little details that is put into the design.

2002 Land Rover Freelander S 2.5 liter V6

Summary:

A great, small "Cute-Ute", but does not have what it takes to be a true Land Rover.

Faults:

Transmission had to be replaced at 27,000 miles.

The transmission replaced at 27,000 miles was re-built and not new, it failed at 36,000 miles and this time the dealer ordered a new transmission.

Right rear passenger door strap needed to be replaced.

Starter cylinder failed.

Power door lock on left rear passenger door failed.

General Comments:

Lacks true low-range gearing.

Overall torque of 177 pounds-feet is a bit low for off-road use.

Extremely solid frame.

Very agile on road and quite capable in light-moderate off-road use.

Freelander's off-road ability does not live up to the Land Rover name.
