1992 Lexus LS 400

Summary:

Best Buy in a luxury car $ can buy!

Faults:

LCD screen showing heat temp is not working, plus 2 icons stay lit up (which is a $500.00 repair), but it doesn't affect the car in any way so I just live with them.

General Comments:

Hands down, the best car I have ever owned. Just tried out the newer 2000 Mercedes S-430, My 1992LS is quieter than the Mercedes.

1992 Lexus LS 400

Summary:

An experience every luxury car lover should have

Faults:

CD Changer @ 130000 miles - not fixed. Will get a used one for about $200.

Temp and clock display @ 135000 - not fixed.

Alternator @ 120000 - Rebuilt with $250 with 2 year warranty.

General Comments:

Every car I've driven pales in comparison. Just bought a Mercedes ML430 but just can't get rid of my LS400. The novelty wore off on the Mercedes after 3 weeks and I'm primarily driving the LS400 again.

1992 Lexus LS 400

Summary:

Best automobile built... if you can't afford a new one just buy it used

Faults:

Not a thing from when I got the car until a few months ago at about 250,000 when just after a major service (which included the timing belt) and cost $2100) did the water pump freeze up on a trip and blew the timing belt... road call and another $1500 to get running, but outside of a battery at about 220,000 and tires, brakes, etc... nothing went wrong in almost a decade... it still rides like a dream and I can't believe it still doesn't need shocks (though I ride mostly highways)... undoubtedly the quietest ride on the road.. just awesome...

General Comments:

The car turns on a dime, anyone who drives it can't believe the sharp turning radius.

I need to think about a new car, but the new ones LS430 cost a bloody fortune... $55,000.. whew! I got mine used with 60,000 for $25,500 when it probably cost about $45,000 new... anyway, I haven't found any car that compares to it... it just rides soft, smooth and so quiet with still a lot of power to pull out on a highway... Mercedes, BMW, Infiniti all want their customers to 'feel' the drive and excitement... not Lexus, it's like sitting in your living room couch.. just wonderful... even the leather is still in grand shape after 11 years.

Thanks for the comments about your 1992 Lexus LS400. I'm considering buying a '92 LS400 with about 147,000 miles from a private owner, and was kind of worried about the miles. I took the car for a test drive, and practically fell in love. The car is in excellent condition. Your review maybe has really sold the vehicle.

1992 Lexus LS 400 4.0L V8 MPI DOHC 24v

Summary:

An extremely well made car that delivers a lot of luxury and the best ride of any car.

Faults:

Absolutely nothing has gone wrong since I have owned the car.

In the documentation I have there are records of the following minor problems (all repaired at the Lexus dealership) :

The power antenna apparatus was malfunctioning and replaced at 37,829 kilometers.

The LCD display for the temperature settings began to fade out at 59,023 kilometers, but has began to come back slowly after the fuses were updated.

The glove box light failed and was replaced at 51,828 kilometers.

Other than these minor problems the car is virtually new.

I have maintained it excellent condition.

General Comments:

This the by far the best car I have ever owned. I wanted to purchase one back in 1992, but could not afford it at the time, so when I returned from over seas I spotted this car at the local Lexus dealership. It had low mileage and was in immaculate condition. I bought it with confidence as the original owner was a 63 year old oral surgeon who lived 8 kilometers from the dealership, hence it was dealer maintained since new for every single service and tune up. There were extensive records of oil changes with premium synthetic high grade oil every 2,000 kilometers since it was not driven very often. Included in the records was a thorough service every 10,000 kilometers and receipts of every visit to the gas station using premium unleaded fuel. The car has never been through an automatic or touch-less car wash. It was and still is detailed at the Lexus dealership every two months.

This is only touching the surface of the extensive maintenance of this pristine automobile. I believe a car should be well taken care of, since it is the second most expensive investment any has to make besides a home.

The LS400 drives extremely smoothly, you almost have to watch the tachometer jump up to signify the car starting because the engine is so quiet. The drive-train is bulletproof and perfectly mated to the four speed automatic transmission which shifts very smoothly (it is hard to over-rev this engine because of its design). It achieves amazing fuel efficiency for a V8, even though it is a small one at four liters. Overall an outstanding car to drive, especially on the highway where you can really let the engine breathe its power.

As for reliability, nothing comes close to it, as Lexus has earned J.D. Power's most reliable car every year since its arrival in North America in 1990.
