Wow, 300,000 huh? That's amazing. I'm gonna be buying one with 212,000 on it already, but from what I hear this is a great car, so I'm gonna risk it. The interior is extremely well taken care of, which pretty much tells me that the owner took good care of the car overall.

1988 Mazda 626 LX 2.2L

Summary:

I wish I could find another like this one

Faults:

Keep in mind that this is a high-mileage car, and these faults were distributed over 190,000 miles of driving. CV boots are fairly short lived, averaging one boot replacement every 18 months.

The clutch master cylinder began leaking and needed replacement at about 150,000 miles.

The gears in the electric window lifts have failed on both rear doors, making the windows impossible to open and allowing them to fall down over big bumps.

The moon roof needs a nudge before it will pop open, but the sliding function still works.

I've replaced the leaking valve cover gasket twice.

The electric antenna will no longer go up-and-down. So I unplugged the power connector on the radio, pulled the antenna up and left it. No problem.

It takes so long to warm up in cold weather, I replaced the 185-degree OEM thermostat with a 195-degree one. It didn't help.

The lap belt tends not to fully retract when you take it off, causing it to fall out the door when you exit the car. When it does, the door doesn't fully close, leaving the dome light on. Several times I failed to notice the door hadn't completely close and the battery ran down.

The shoulder belt is one of those annoying motorized mice. If you open the door and stick out your head -- like to get a better view when backing up -- the accursed thing will try to decapitate you. Hell has an especially warm place reserved for the inventor of the motorized passive restraining shoulder harness.

One wheel bearing, one CV boot and joint, and one tie rod end -- and who knows what else -- now are worn out (after more than a quarter of a million miles, I don't wonder). I can buy a newer model of the same car for less than the repair so, sadly, it's time to put it out to pasture.

General Comments:

This car has been extremely economical basic transportation. Except when the battery has gone dead, it has never failed to start. Not once!

It still has the original clutch.

Until six months ago (at about 250,000 miles) it still gave 32mpg or better around town, 34mpg or better highway.

This is without a doubt the best buy I ever made in a car.

I also have one of these cars, and just had to comment on your remarks about the seat belts. I couldn't agree more, am rolling on the floor laughing.

Summary:

Comfortable, well-rounded car

Faults:

The rear stabilizer links have broken; replacing these also required replacing the forward arm.

The B.A.C. valve and throttle position sensor malfunctioned, and they needed to be replaced. This was a very expensive repair ($1100).

The right rear brake line blew, and the brake fluid cylinder on the right rear blew previous to the brake line.

General Comments:

My car has a very comfortable ride. It handles very responsively on the turns, but it does not have very quick acceleration in either power or economy mode.

I really like the option of outside air vent or fan. I also like the tachometer being included even though it is automatic. The seat belt clips, however, have broken on both front seats.

Repairs are very expensive with parts that must be ordered through the dealership.

1988 Mazda 626 Turbo 2.2 turbo

Summary:

Super car

Faults:

Small valve leak on cylinder number three when I bought it. A year later, number four did the same thing. Head cylinder have been changed.

I had to select the sport selection on the electric suspension to get a better handling.

The car is fairly quiet below 80km/h, but wind noises from the rear windows start on higher speed.

I had to change the rear amplifier module on the radio.

General Comments:

Very powerfull car.

Handling still good and fun to drive.

Clutch, shock absorber, radiator, alternator, starter are all original.

The engine is still running smoothly. No oil consumption noted.

Fuel consumption is fairly good: 10 liter/100km on highway.

I'm about to get an '89 626 GT with electric suspension. I am just curious about how it works; do I hit the button, then the car sinks or rises an inch?

1988 Mazda 626 LX 2.2 non turbo

Summary:

Good old friend

Faults:

Friction parts replaced periodically, as should be expected. First clutch replaced at about 250,000 km.

Rebuilt engine at 282,000 km because of oil burning. Now at 400,000 km, it is burning oil excessively so we will soon retire the vehicle.

Power windows now operate only from the driver's door switches.

Oil drips have been a problem throughout the life of this car.

General Comments:

This has been a comfortable reliable car for 14 years. I'm sad to see it reach the end of its life and wish I could buy a new one just like it.
