1989 Mazda B2200 SE-5 2.2

Summary:

This is a very strong truck, and I plan on keeping it for a long time

Faults:

I own an '89 Mazda B2200. The engine has 172,000 miles and misses while driving. I am in the process of putting a new engine in it, but it's a slow process.

I need a reman. head and was wondering if anyone knew where I could get a good, but not expensive one? I am putting a header, Weber carb, and 2 1/2" pipe with a Borla muffler. I need a good head because I am planning on running now when I get the bottom end of the engine finished. I also need to know if the auto trans. rear end has a higher gear ratio, because 1st gear sucks. I would appreciate any info anybody can help me with.

I have been looking into the turbo thing for a while. So, I need a MX-6 turbo motor, ecu, and what kind of tranny do you use and what kind of rear end? The b2200 motor I have milked every little bit out of a 60,000 mile motor. SLOW. I need the turbo. Do you guys know if the motor mounts line right up?, etc.

Hi I owned a 1989 Mazda b2200 for a long time. I was having problem with carb + head + ecu. To start the engine had 213k miles, so I rebuilt the engine, got a new head from a Carolina machine shop, went to a salvage yard & found an 86 Mazda 626 with EFI setup, installed it with A MEGASQUIRT EFI controller. The cheapest setup I have installed & it works very well. Does not required fusion/engineering to work with.

I replaced my cylinder head with one from "Clearwater". I think they are out of Florida if I remember. I have a 91 and it had a head from an earlier model with mechanical lifters. I replaced it with the "Clearwater" head that has mechanical lifters of superior design, a thicker casting on the cylinder head, and better alloys than stock.

1989 Mazda B2200 SE-5 2.2L gasoline

Summary:

A good little truck that will run forever if you take care of it

Faults:

Fuel pump a few times (not sure of the mileage).

Exhaust system around 130k, basic tune-up stuff.

General Comments:

My dad owned the truck before me, and my neighbor before that, so I know the whole history of it. No serious problems ever with it.

Replaced the fuel pump a few times (My dad was throwing parts at it).

Engine smokes really bad at startup every winter (gone once it warms it's gone).

The clutch is original (yes, 194k miles) and the engine runs damn good, but the lifters are noisy during the summer.

My only complaints are that the manual steering is unbelievably stiff. and the other thing is that the truck is S-L-O-W! No power at all.

Great gas mileage for the most part.

It's never had a serious breakdown when my neighbor, my dad, or myself owned it. The older Mazdas (before Ford re-badged Rangers as B series trucks (93 and newer)) are good solid little trucks.

I own an 89 B2200 with 240,000 miles, I put every one on and I've loved every mile. I still drive it today and would have to agree that it's a good truck and has more room inside that those remarked B series in the 93 models.

Looking for a good trouble shooting web-page for the little things that happen to a truck with so many miles, anyone got any directions?

Thanks

1989 Mazda B2200 LXI (Super Cab Pickup) 2.2 liter

Summary:

A good solid truck, a faithful friend

Faults:

Replaced the clutch, brakes.

Rebuilt head at 140,000 miles.

Overheating problems at 150,000 miles, possibly due to a bad fan clutch.

General Comments:

Good economy for a pickup of this size.

Underpowered of course, goes up the mountain passes at about 50 when empty.

Nice design on the engine and mechanical stuff, good thinking makes it relatively easy to work on.

Excellent quality in the work and materials. I am impressed with Mazda!
