2000 Mazda MPV LX

Summary:

This van has been the most reliable and fun to drive

Faults:

Drivers power door lock actuator broke at 90,000 miles.

Cracked exhaust manifold at 80,000 miles - welded.

Replaced coolant reservoir and water pump at 120,000 miles.

Cracked exhaust manifold at 130,000 miles.

General Comments:

This van has been extremely reliable and has never left us stranded. There have been very few things that have gone wrong with it. It is well worth the money we paid. We just passed 160,000 miles and the van is still going strong. It is getting a bit worn, but that is expected in a van that is almost 10 years old. We also have triplet boys, need I say more.

The V6 engine has sufficient power for most situations, however it is sluggish when fully loaded. We have 5 children, and when we are all in the van with all our luggage for a weekend at the lake, it works pretty hard to get us through the canyon.

We have loved the stow-able third row. This has been a very nice feature considering we also use the van for our trips to the hardware store. We have used this feature a lot.

This van handles very well, very car-like. My wife feels like she is driving a car, which she really likes. It does not feel like a van.

It is getting a bit small for our family now though. Once you get 3 car seats and 2 older kids in, things can get pretty tight. Til now though it has been a great van.

You are right that it drives well - we've had a '99 MPV for about 4 months now and love it. We recently took it over New Zealand's infamous '309 road' on the Coromandel (10% tarmac, 60% gravel, 30% wet clay) over 30 km of mountain range crossing twisties, and it handled almost as well as a rally car (have circuit raced a 911 and placed at autocrosses, so have some idea of what handling means).

Took us almost half an hour to clean the car afterwards as it had kilos of clay stuck under and along it. In more normal usage, the MPV also handled an emergency lane change in town brilliantly.

Summary:

Great van, a gem!

Faults:

Replaced the water pump and coolant reservoir at 148,000 miles.

Passenger door lock actuator at 100,000 miles.

Cracked exhaust manifold at 100,000 miles, welded and cracked again 2 years later and now needs to be replaced at a cost of $750 just for the part.

General Comments:

My MPV is now passing 153,000 miles and going strong. I have not had any major problems or issues since I bought it 7 years ago. The engine has been strong although a little bit on the weak side when loaded down with family and gear.

We love the rear folding bench seat and the fact the middle chairs can be pushed together to form a bench. It is a little small on space however when you put triplets in the car with three car seats and 2 older children. We have found however that the storage space behind the third row is spacious. If we take a trip that is for more than 2 or 3 days we have to use a roof box.

This has been a wonderful and reliable van just wish it was a little bit bigger.

2000 Mazda MPV DX 2.5L gas

Summary:

This is the best minivan ever!

Faults:

Spark plug was burnt and needed to be be replaced.

The audio system stopped working for no apparent reason.

The lever for the second row side by slide seat kept getting stuck.

General Comments:

Handling was excellent for a van. It felt light and nimble, but still secure.

It was very comfortable, though the third row was hard on your knees, since it was so low.

My only main complaint was that the 2.5 engine seems a bit underpowered compared to other vans such as the 4.3 on my old Astro or the 3.5 on my current Sienna.

I loved this van, it was one of the most trouble free vehicles I have ever had, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a good minivan.
