1990 Mazda MX5 1.6

Summary:

A class act all the way

Faults:

Replaced clutch at 120k, also put in a new timing belt at that time. At 135000 I had the rear brakes replaced. The plastic rear window ripped, so I had to have a complete new convertible top installed. Pricey!

General Comments:

Handling and steering are great. Engine could use a bit more power, so I'd get the 1.8 next time. Still the 1.6 loves being revved and has a sporty character. The car fit me like a glove, a delight to drive. I found the hardtop very useful during winter driving.

1990 Mazda MX5 Miata

Summary:

Best vehicle I've ever had, and probably ever will

Faults:

Rear disk brakes wear wedge shaped.

Many dents due to soft metal on body.

Spark plug wire shorted on engine block.

Catalytic convertor had to be replaced.

General Comments:

The Rear disc brakes have been replaced at least four times due to wearing wedge shaped...The service dept. had no explanation for it, but there was an equal wear on both sides. The one shoe would have little wear, but the one's that move were full thickness on one end, and down to the metal on the other. (Would appreciate any comments on this, as the problem is still ongoing.)

One just has to look at the body to put a dent in it.

This is a great vehicle, and I will not part with it. Every year, I get the Ziebart rust protection done, and there is no rust anywhere...I'm sorry to see Mazda come out with the new Miata without the pop-up headlights...They look like a Neon from the front.

Vehicle handle great at high speed, and tight corners.

1990 Mazda MX5 Miata Standard

Summary:

A great convertible for the budget minded

Faults:

The transmission required repairs. The 1990 model has a defect that sometimes results in the transmission being "stuck in reverse." Cost: $600.00.

The top has it's problems, but then it is the original top. To have a professional replace the top, you can expect to spend around $800.00. This is not a do-it-yourself project. Get somebody who has done it before, and well.

General Comments:

This is my 4th Miata and I have loved all of them.

If you like riding in a convertible and don't need space for more than one passenger and a few bags, this is the car to get.

Reliable, reliable, reliable. You can't beat driving a car you know will start and run and not give you fits.

1990 Mazda MX5 Miata 1.6

Summary:

Definite buy

Faults:

Replaced the rear plastic window. (faded)

Car vibrates at 100-105Km/hr.

Manual adjustment of side mirrors difficult.. Plastic may crack if forced.

General Comments:

The ride is sporty and high speed can be safely attained in tight curves.

Suggest installation of radio speakers in headrests.

Fairly economical of gas. Very low maintenance cost.

1990 Mazda MX5 Miata (A package) 1.6L twin cam

Summary:

Therapy on wheels

Faults:

So far, nothing. But the short nose crankshaft might be a problem. Something to keep an eye on.

General Comments:

This car is a therapy on four wheels. I can't drive it (especially with the top down) without forgetting about any problems I might have at the moment. Just pure fun and happiness.

The strong point of this car is definitely handling. You feel totally in control and you have to push it really hard to make it "misbehave".

The 118hp engine is great, with a red line at 7200rpm. To really enjoy it, you have to rev it over 5000rpm.

The interior is simple, nice and functional. The seats are comfortables and the driving position is good.

Surprisingly, this little 2 seater handles great in the snow (with proper winter tires) and is a lot of fun on moderately slippery roads. (let alone parking lots. ;) )

I can't really be objective when talking about my Miata... to me, it's just the greatest sport car on earth. If you like to drive, you'll like the Miata.
