1993 Mazda MX6 2L

Summary:

Nice, sporty, easy on gas

Faults:

-My alternator went at 210,000 KM

-I replaced a control arm, tie rod end, rear brakes, all belts, distributor cap and rotor.

General Comments:

The car drives really well. For all the mileage, I didn't have to replace too many expenive things. they are mostly parts that can go at any time. I I suggest buying away from the dealer. they quoted me over 3 times the price of buying the parts myself and getting a local mechanic fix the car.

On a positive note, the car is really easy on gas. The preformance is really good, and the styling looks great.

1993 Mazda MX6 LS 2.5 V6

Summary:

A quick reliable bargain

Faults:

The previous owner told me he replaced the CB joints. That was the only major repair the car has had. At 133000, the piston rings are starting to go, so the car is burning some major oil. I took it to a mechanic and he put some oil additives in the oil so the car now only burns about a 3/4 a quart every 3-4000 miles.

General Comments:

Despite the high mileage, the car still has retained most of its power. The car is quick and fun. Great car for younger people. The handling is amazing. It really sticks to the road. This car is very comfortable.

Buddy, you probably won't read this, but piston rings don't go on these cars!!! The problem is that these engines get dirty very quickly, and that requires flushing it very often. If it were piston rings, your car would smoke - instead it's just burning oil just like most high RPM Japanese engines do - they simply have to.

So, go to mx6.com and search for Kerosene Flush procedure and flush your engine. If you're afraid to use Kerosene, search for Auto RX on Google, and buy their product and flush your engine - you'll be surprised after how good these engines are!!!

Synthetic Oil will keep the engine clean and lasting much longer. I've logged 5-10% better fuel economy. I used Mobil 1 for 200,000 Km (120K Miles) on a 1989 Mazda 121 aka Festiva and sold it to my brother who sold it at 240,000, and it is still going strong. It endured -45 to 100 F temps and lots of fast and hard driving. It helps to have the engine warm to operating temp first if you want longevity. Treat it gently till warm! It got the best readings you could possibly get on a Compression and Leak-Down test, and the camshaft still looked like new. Required valve adj service every 24K and found to be totally clean around valvetrain. Valves never had to be adjusted and oil never had to be added. The cam (on overhead cam engines) get the oil last on startup where most wear occurs.

1993 Mazda MX6 LS 2.5 V6

Summary:

Fast and for the small of body

Faults:

Timing belt went at 100000 miles.

CV joint at 104000 at that time I also got a full tune up.

General Comments:

It run's well, it's fast and looks great. I have had few problems with this car.

I use it for work and have put a lot of miles on it going all around New England.

The cockpit is noisy.

However I found that a lighter placed between the door and dashboard reduced the amount of noise it makes.

Seats are well fitting, but if I were overweight I would hate this car, it is meant for lightweights only.

1993 Mazda MX6 LS 2.5 litre dual overhead cam

Summary:

Although expensive, it moves

Faults:

Since I acquired my vehicle I have had very few problems that are not expected with mileage on any vehicle.

At approximately 100,000 miles the water pump went out. I had a Mazda dealership repair this due to the extent of work, and lack of tools and space.

At approximately 110,000 miles the oil pressure-sending unit went out causing the vehicle to dump all four and a half quarts of oil on the freeway. This was also a Mazda dealership repaired item, due again to a lack of tools and space.

At approximately 125,000 mile I had to replace both drive axles. I went to Auto Zone to buy this item for the fact that Mazda wanted $500 for each axle, and Auto Zone only wanted $150 with a lifetime warranty. I took this to a small mechanics shop to replace this item costing me only $65 an axle. I also had to replace the oxygen sensors at this time. This was very expensive although I did it myself. I spent approximately $300 on just the sensors alone, not purchased from Mazda.

At approximately 135,000 miles the thermostat ceased to open causing severe engine overheating. This was not only something that needs to regularly be replaced. I found that the thermostat I removed from my vehicle was the original from Mazda. This I replaced myself with minimal effort and cost.
