2001 Mazda Tribute LX

Summary:

Waste of Money!

Faults:

Vinyl on all 4 doors peeled off.

Drivers door handle broke.

Cruise control broke.

Transmission stutters/jumps.

Door closed light works intermittent.

Door ash tray fell out.

Headliner fell down.

Headlight cover fogged.

General Comments:

The car is very easy to maneuver in the city. However, for long trips the seats are to short if you are over about 5'2". The seat hits too short behind your knee and makes long time sitting uncomfortable.

After about 4 years it seemed to begin to fall apart around me. I meant to keep it 10 years and at least 100k as you'd expect from a Toyota. I feel like I'm riding a junker and with the current economy, want to wait a couple years to buy a new one.

Can't imagine any scenario where I would pass up a Toyota and buy a Mazda again. The only compensation they could give me would be a brand new vehicle (not a Tribute) and I'll give a review of that one in a few years.

Too bad a Mazda Tribute isn't really a Mazda, it's a Ford. Don't know what they were thinking with that one.

Mazda used to build decent vehicles, but then they had to be bought out by Ford. Who inevitably ruined them.

2001 Mazda Tribute LX

Summary:

Good while it lasted, which was too short

Faults:

The transmission on my 2001 Tribute just failed at 64,000 miles. No automatic transmission should fail that early.

The car was really only driven to work and back - no long distance or off-road treks. I had done all of the required maintenance on time and at the dealer where I bought the car - luckily this paid off for me as BG who provide the fluids (?) for all maintenance paid $2K of the $3.2K cost of the "new" rebuilt transmission.

2001 Mazda Tribute LX

Summary:

I've been very happy with this car overall, despite some early problems

Faults:

Power steering leaked shortly after purchase, two steering racks had to be installed to fix the problem.

CV joints replaced at 40,000 miles.

Master brake cylinder is seeping fluid.

Factory installed alarm had a tendency to go off randomly about a year after purchase, traced to a faulty switch in the rear window latch.

General Comments:

The car has had generally good performance since I bought it, despite some quality issues that date back to time of purchase (primarily with the power steering).

Car is generally pretty comfortable and well laid out, though the transmission lever is in the way of the radio controls in this model.

2001 Mazda Tribute LX 3.0

Summary:

Mechanically very reliable

Faults:

Rear window washer motor seized (My daughter has a Escape and same thing happened)

Front left and right rear door mechanisms broke. Had to order parts from Mazda. Car was unusable for a week. (Again same thing happened to left rear on daughters Escape)

Radio sometimes shows strange looking hieroglyphic type symbols (but it still plays fine)

General Comments:

Rides very nice and is very comfortable.

Feels larger then it really is.

Interior feels too "plasticy"

2001 Mazda Tribute LX V6

Summary:

Good if you get one without these serious transmission problems

Faults:

The transmission gave out at 77,000 miles. The fluid was changed and within 48 hours the car shook violently at an intersection then lost power at the transmission. The dealer says the transmission has been failing for a while and all that can be done is a rebuild for $3,600. This is pathetic.

Did you ever change the tranny fluid regularly? Or just when it all started to go wrong (which was too late)?

Yes, I understand your frustration, my transmission went out at 35,000 miles in the middle of the desert (route 66 en route to Arizona and yes, I do keep up with my regular fluid changes/checks) at midnight, on top of MANY other problems that I have had, I think this is just a defect in the 2003 models, as everyone else I have spoken to who own a 2004, 2005 or 2006 year model have never had a problem with their Tributes.
