1990 Mercedes-Benz W124 300E 3.0L

Summary:

Absolutely love my 300E

Faults:

So far everything that I've needed to get fixed or plan on fixing has come from the previous owner (s).

Many paint chips on the front and on the windshield. Windshield already replaced and planning to repaint too.

The sound system had by hijacked by previous owner. Wires cuts and only the 2 front speakers work. No fault of MB there.

Major oil leak when acquired. That has been fixed.

Seems like most small problems I come across come from previous neglect. Glad I have one of the last over-engineered MB's.

General Comments:

Very classic car that I love driving around in. It feels like you're driving a panzer tank around because of the solid feel of the construction.

Windows have just been 22% tinted, so it now looks like a mafia car.

Ordered Euro headlights to replace faded American-style junk.

Interior wood panels a little cracked from the sun, but I expected that.

The shocks make for an incredibly smooth ride on bumpy California roads.

Mechanic says the engine looks brand new inside. Hooray for German engineering.

Decent enough gas mileage, but makes up for it by being an incredible highway cruiser.

Acceleration is good enough once the car is warmed up, but can be a little jerky when cold.

Plan on owning this car as long as physically possible.

1990 Mercedes-Benz W124 300E 3.0L SOHC 12V

Summary:

Timeless

Faults:

Water Pump was dead when I bought it.

Glove box bulb burned out.

General Comments:

What can one say after owning this car?

Timeless styling, decent handling, superior craftsmanship.

Parts are also easy to get and inexpensive. It is essential to have a specialist repair the car if needed. Otherwise, most of the work is simple enough to be handled by DIY mechanics with simple tools and a Haynes manual.

I wish they had made more of these cars manual. I am currently attempting a conversion.

Summary:

No wonder they cost so much, they're worth it!

Faults:

Nothing yet.

General Comments:

This car is more solid at 15 years old than my dinky little brand new 2003 honda civic ex was when I acquired it.

I couldn't agree more. I just purchased a 1987 300E and it truly is a superior automobile. Even at 130k miles it rides and runs better than most new cars I have driven (including the two 2000 model year cars I own).

Just got myself a 1990 300E, manual gearbox.. Excellent car.. definitely will be improving to newer models in the future.

1990 Mercedes-Benz W124 300E 4Matic (4 wheel drive) 3.0 litre gas

Summary:

Solid

Faults:

The thermostat housing cracked and the upper radiator hose blew off in Ottawa (think snow and cold) in February. Good thing I noticed. The part was $24 CND but the dealer wouldn't fix it for days. I took the part and fixed it myself (it's been replaced with an all metal part that won't crack again). I have water pump and coolant tank leaks but they are not critical yet. The engine burns a lot of oil but works well. The rear window has stopped working. Generally this is a robust car. Solid. A little rust. Relatively good and has needed little in terms of repairs in the year and a half I've owned it.

General Comments:

Good car. Solid and reliable.
