1989 Mercury Cougar LS

Summary:

This is a functional, yet snazzy car

Faults:

In the first year I had water on the front passenger floor. Dealer fixed it, but I was never clear on what caused it. Has never happened again in 14 years.

Air conditioner worked well for about 5 years, then had constant problems from seals going bad to compressor going bad. After spending lots of money, I decided to pretend I was living in my teenage years in the 60's, and just open the windows. : (

Seats have faded, but probably normal after so many years in the sun. No wear at all though.

General Comments:

In general, I love this car. I bought it new, have taken very good care of it (such as oil changes every 3000 miles) for 130,000 miles, and I plan to keep it almost forever. My fiance is a mechanic/used auto parts dealer, and my son-in-law is a 20-year body shop specialist... that is how I plan to keep it forever.

The factory sound system is very good.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

IF you have the 3.8 V6 under the hood, get those head gaskets checked. Very common for older 3.8's to eat their head gaskets.

Hi we just received my fiance's aunt's old cougar it's a 1988 I don't know anything really about these cars. I love it the outside looks really good. It has some rusty spots, but hardly noticed. And the thing I want to post is I think it's easier to have the heater core fixed by the shop. We had a very nice time taking apart the entire dash to put this new one in. It least we were able to save the labor costs. And we were able to at the same time replace the dash lights. I'm posting this in hopes that someone can please help us. We have a 1988 Cougar it's the V6 and the problem we are having at this time that is very important is that we believe the window motors are shot. We currently have them up. (thank god for air) and very cool air. Anyways we went to a junk yard and we took out one motor from same year. Same style and well anyways the motor was not even close to the same. We also noticed when we looked in the book when replacing the heater core it seems as though we need to pay attention to the details of a 1989 cougar. Our title and everything else we have say it's a 1988

If anyone can help that would be great. I'm getting ready to order from a company the motors for a great deal. And they have a warranty, but I'm afraid I'm not going to ever get the right motors any help would be loved.

Also we have the drivers side seat that is tilted and makes it not so comfy. Anyone who can help find a seat that is beige in color and is the one with the center counsel and is electric would be great. Even if you know websites for this stuff. Please. We'd like to get it up and going a little better before winter. And anything else that is common we need to know about would be great. other than her (Bertha) that is what his aunt called her. Her fav drink is lots and lots and lots of gasoline which as of today is about 2.69 a gallon. Ouch!!! And if anyone can give est gas mileage. I swear I put 20.00 in her last night and it was almost at full drove 86 miles and just put 43.00 in her tonight to top her off. It says 16.?? gallons. How many gallons do they hold. I just got rid of the wrong car. just sold my Toyota tercel about 35 mpg stupid me. But like the bigger car and we have too many at this time. Want to get the cougar up and going. Trying to get her to pass inspection for safety and emissions. She failed emissions. Bad.

Any help or suggestions helpful.

She sits with a slant right now as well. Figured shocks or struts. Also has squeaks like crazy underhood. After doing the heater core.

Luxury is the Mercury Cougar LS

Faults:

I slammed into a curb in the snow at around 69,000 miles. Control arm, brushing kit, upper ball joints and rim all needed to be replaced. That costed me 500 dollars.

My clutch fan went at 70,000 miles. I replaced it for 40 dollars.

General Comments:

This car is great. I've only had those troubles which were really my faults, but it holds up well and can take a beating. The car is still holding onto the original transmission and is in need of an oil change. The bad thing about it is that it's rear wheel drive so it's bad in snow or rain (depending on the condition of your tires.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes
