1990 Mercury Cougar xr-7 Supercharged

Summary:

One word: Underrated

Faults:

Radiator at 70000

Power window motor at 73000.

General Comments:

Off the line, this car is stellar. Very quick for it's weight of almost 2 tonnes. Gorgeous monochromatic black exterior gathers many stares everywhere it is seen. Excellent seats and a very strong drive train complete the car. With very few modifications, the Cougar XR-7 is more than a match for many cars. An absolute value for such a rare car.

1990 Mercury Cougar LS 3.8 V6

Summary:

One of the best cars Ford ever built

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Fabulous, outstanding, remarkable. The best car I ever owned period. Owes me nothing, has never let me down or left me stranded. Runs great, reliable, economical to drive, service and maintain. Getting a little rusty under the doors, but not bad for a 17 year old car. Very comfortable seats and solid construction quality makes me feel safe on the road. I know I could buy something more economical, but why? After all these years I still love my Cougar and would highly recommend one.

1990 Mercury Cougar LS 3.8 efi

Summary:

Reliable/bulletproof engine!

Faults:

Window came off the track. Was like that when I got it. Fixed it, all you have to do is put some really strong glue on the tracks. Temp gauge becomes hot in summer, to fix this just open the windows all the way and turn the heater fan on high, temp will go back to normal. Other than that very reliable car, never been stranded!

General Comments:

Very reliable car! Still drive it daily with 150,000 miles with no mechanical problems whatsoever! Everything works! Very quiet and comfy ride. Highly recommend a Mercury Cougar LS with the plain 3.8 V-6! I average 22 MPG in mine!

Beast

Motor mounts at 82k.

Window motors at 90k.

Thermostat housing gasket at 95k.

Tranny has bad synchros.

Bad alternator or battery at 95k.

General Comments:

This car is virtually indestructible. My brother owned the car first. I know he didn't treat it easy, ex. racing any challengers.

It's got the most comfortable seat I've even been in.

This is the fastest car I've ever been in. It drives better the faster you go.

1990 Mercury Cougar LS V.6

Summary:

A Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car. This car is very reliable, dependable and is a workhorse..

Faults:

The head gaskets needed to be replaced at 155,000 miles. This was a very expensive repair, but it was worth it in the long run.

The power windows are very heavy and tend to come off the tracks, especially in cold weather. Had to have these windows repaired several times.

General Comments:

All in all, I love my 1990 Mercury Cougar!

I call it my "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" car because just like in that movie, the car still had life in it after she was older. I bought it off a used car lot when it was about 7 years old and it had 152,000 miles on it then, but there was something about this car that made me fall in love with her. This car ran when my brother's more expensive Mercedes was riddled with mechanical problems!

She is so reliable and has never left me stranded, never. I know she won't last forever, and I also know I will never have another car like this one again. This car is sacred to me. Right now, she has about 170,000 and is still kickin'. I hate to trade her in and will run it until it falls apart, if it ever does. This car is a workhorse.

An honor to own this car.

I purchased my 1990 Cougar used with 68,000 miles. I immediately put her in the shop and went bumper to bumper.

Replaced the struts and shocks, did a complete break job, and tuned her up.

My "Betsy" went everywhere. When I traded her in for my 1997 used cougar, good old reliable Betsy had 210,000 miles.

With the exception of tune ups, oil changes, tires and an occasional bulb change this 1990 Cougar was the best.

Oh how I wish that Ford would bring back the same styling and reliabilty.

I just purchased a 1990 cougar LS with the V6. It's silver with maroon/claret interior. My neighbor's wife drove it off the showroom floor. It has 89,000 miles on it. My neighbor has all records. He told me, "little lady, I change her oil every 3,000 miles, then I take her down and get her tires rotated". I know this car was loved... Unfortunately his wife passed away this December. The old fellow said he was moving south and did not need 2 vehicles.

So far I just love the way this car handles. She's responsive and fast. I like the lines of her body and the interior reeks of upholstery work that we will probably never see again. At first I thought I resell her, but now I'm hooked!! She's a keeper!!
