1999 Mercury Cougar V6
Summary:
Emissions Problems Anyone?
Faults:
While still under warranty within a year of purchasing brand new, had to have alternator replaced.
Check engine light has been on since 6 months after purchasing. Kept returning to dealer, but they could never find the problem. They finally said the computer was bad, but they did not fix it.
Many sensors have been replaced.
Trunk latch problems.
Moon roof will no longer open--stopped working years ago.
Had to have fan motor replaced as heater/ac fan would only work on 4.
Tires need replacing frequently and are expensive.
Cover over defroster flies off when I turn the defroster on high.
General Comments:
My main concern right now is that my car will not pass emissions. I cannot get my tags renewed until I pass the emissions test and I have spent a lot of money so far getting sensors, plugs, etc etc etc replaced and the EGR replaced and cleaned. The check engine light is STILL on. Has anyone had this problem or can you give me some pointers as to what I can do? I am very frustrated and tired of dealing with this.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

While I love my car, I too have also had to replace my ERG valve, multiple sensors, my check engine light and my coolant light have been on for longer than I can remember and no one can seem to fix them, my moon roof has ceased to work as well only it's stuck cracked open, my rear defrost shorted out and shattered my entire back glass, and I've had to replace the alternator twice. Mine is currently in the shop awaiting repair on yet another sensor that causes my entire car to shake whenever it's idling. Finding a mechanic who will willingly work on this car is quite an endeavor within itself. I feel your desperation.
