1991 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 5.0L 302 ci

Summary:

A fantastic car at a very reasonable price

Faults:

Exhaust pipe corroded.

Parking brake assembly had to be replaced.

Drivers power door lock actuator has failed.

Not wrong, but many misunderstand the optional automatic heater controls. It will blow air in defrost setting anytime, but only blows air on the heat setting when it reaches the programmed temperature to keep from blowing cold air on your feet. The Owner's manual explains this.

General Comments:

This was my first '91 Grand Marquis. Tan in color.

Love the ride. Lots of room for the wife and child.

Full frame construction and an airbag for safety.

Fantastic ride on our lousy rough roads. It is my daily driver.

Highway averages 24 mpg, combined city/hwy 18, all city 15.

Love the car. An older non classic that gets you there in comfort. Lots of legroom for taller people like me.

Easy to work on and mechanical parts are readily available anywhere. Cosmetic pieces on a 20 year old car are harder to find.

Mine is very clean and in great condition. I have had many people at carwashes and gas stations ask about it.

Mine has the traction loc rear axle (both wheels have power in case one slips) and it does very well in the snow.

I love it enough that I bought a second one.

Unfortunately, they will never make them this way again.

"Unfortunately, they will never make them this way again."

The last Grand Marquis rolled off the assembly line earlier this month :(

1991 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 5.0

Summary:

Big, awesome ride, if you don't mind the heat!

Faults:

Power steering pump went out around 39,000.

Transmission pan gasket failed.

Alternator went out around 45,000.

Thermostat went out last year.

A/C went out two years ago.

Only the drivers side window works correctly presently.

Muffler fell off.

General Comments:

Bought this car as a daily driver, and I'm certainly not disappointed. I love that boat like ride, and the extra-comfortable interior.

Certainly a car of reasonable power as well, I can't complain on the highway. Gas mileage is very surprising, and a bit odd, I get around 17 or so in town, but for some strange reason I get around 29 or so on the highway?? I take a lot of road trips so that's a definite plus.

Right now it has a small water pump leak, and the A/C compressor is out. Also, both back windows go down, but you have to pull them up, the front passenger side window is stuck up, and the automatic locks don't work.

It's just a big boxy land yacht that hopefully has a lot of life left in her, as I have no intention of getting rid of it.

1991 Mercury Grand Marquis GS 5.0 liter V8

Summary:

The car is very Reliable

Faults:

Great car to use on family trips.

Very Reliable car.

Not good gas mileage in the city, but pretty good mileage on the highway.

Transmission usually jerks in the 4th gear.

My power steering hose busted at about 98,000 miles.

The coolant hose ripped at about 99,000 miles.

Has a minor hole in the muffler.

Seats are very comfortable to sit on for a long trip.

General Comments:

This car has some serious power and handles excellent.

The braking power is also really good.

I would recommend this car to anyone who likes to travel and take long trips.

1991 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 5 litre

Summary:

It's a grand touring car with great road presence and will be added to our growing collection

Faults:

Transmission required replacement at the 220,000 kms point.

General Comments:

The car is every bit as comfortable as our Lincoln Continental.

Perhaps because of the full dark blue cloth roof (the one year option) over the white body the car gets a lot of looks.

The colour combination coupled with the up-right formal look of the car gives it a very substantial presence on the road.

The engine is responsive to command and certainly has more than sufficient power to move the car out of potentially difficult situations.

We're proud that the car was manufactured in the St. Thomas, Ontario plant.

It seats six very comfortably, and in style.

The trunk is cavernous.

We're looking at having the car repainted as the clear-coat appears to be wearing off.

Also, the aluminum rims will be refinished because of clear-coat wear there too.

About the car having a formal, upright presence on the road, am I the only one who thinks the body style resembles that of the 1980's era Rolls Royce Spirits and Bentley Mulsannes? Were we copying them, or were they copying us? Or, just coincidental? Sort of like the body styles of today.
