2002 Mercury Mountaineer Premier 4.6L V8

Summary:

Junk, don't buy one

Faults:

ABS Light came on.

All dash warning lights started coming on.

Check engine light now on.

General Comments:

The car was fine other than a couple weird sounds, groaning sounds, weird chirpy noise, we ignored those. Then at 43,000 miles, the ABS light came on. Took it to Ford, they tell me the ABS module is bad and needs replaced. I told them it was making a grinding noise, I thought it sounded more like bearings. They assured me the car was SAFE to drive because I was not willing to pay the $975 for the new ABS module. Asked Ford for after warranty adjustment as I've owned 10 brand new Fords since driving and am probably the MOST brand loyal person you'd ever find, they basically told me to SHOVE IT!. So the day after we pick up the car, my wife said EVERY light started going on and off on the dash. Called the dealer and told them if the car was mis-diagnosed and it is really NOT safe to drive, they will get such a lawsuit. So they had me bring it back. Surprise, nothing wrong with the ABS at all, the $975 would have been a waste of money, it was some kind of wiring problem. Took them a week to find it, but given they mis-diagnosed, they gave me a car to drive and covered it under warranty!!! We've had it back a week, now the check engine light is on. Last Ford I will ever own.

I have a 97 Mountaineer. I bought it and after about 70K miles the ABS light came on. They said the ABS moduel under the seat had shorted out and they replaced it. Then I picked it up an all looked good. I drove it home about 3 miles. Then the rainy day I was driving to work when the ABS light came on again. I was negotiating a turn and pressed the break when the ABS went out and the Mountaineer slid off the road and I hit a big stone wall. Unfortunitally it wasn't enough to total the car. So it was repaired and hasn't felt right since. They replaced the ABS box again and go figure it fried again. The third time I took it to another place and they found a wire that was shorting out against the fire wall and burning out the box. Nice huh? So I feel your pain.

2002 Mercury Mountaineer V8

Faults:

I have had no problems with this Mountaineer. I have owned it since late 2002 and have not had one problem.

The transmission shifts a bit hard at times, but not bad enough for me to take it in to the Dealer.

General Comments:

I was a bit disappointed with the 2002 model, versus the 2000 model I owned previously. Granted, the 2002 was a better ride, was larger, and overall was a better SUV. But, the 2000 had more creature comforts... the dual sunvisors, and higher feature radio for starters.

I have also been unimpressed with the "memory features". How much harder is it to program the car to remember the mirror settings and radio settings? If the car can remember where the drivers' seat was when I left the vehicle, why can't it remember my mirror settings, and radio presets?

Overall, Great SUV.

I have a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. I have owned it for almost 1 year. I felt the same way as you about my "little" and once in a while slips in the transmission. I let it go and now I have to replace the transmission. They say that it is still under warranty {even though it has 37,678 miles on it}. I will find out next week when they say they will be done with it. So my advise to you is to take it to have it checked out. At least, you will have a record of your complaints in case something does go wrong with it.
