Inside door handle came off in my hand in the cold, due to a frozen mechanism. Fixed with new chrome handles.
Comfortable car, best drive I have ever experienced. Nice looks and quality.
Gets 17-30 MPG, starts easy, and drives perfect every time.

Been a very good car
The last two yrs had the heater core changed and the heat doesn't work again. when the car is cool the ac works, but when it gets up to normal temp. it turns to heat. Anyone have a idea what my be the problem.
The car has been great and still runs great.

It's a decent car, just watch out for the transmission
My 1987 Mercury Sable was a good car when I purchased it in 1997. It started for me every morning and was reliable just about all the time. All this ended at around 115.000 miles. The tranny started to slip. When I came to a stop sign, did a rolling stop and hit the gas, the car would rev to 3000 RPM and then bang into gear.
The A/C finally quit also, and the powersteering pump was leaking like it had a huge hole in it, I had to re-fill it daily.
I finally got rid of it when I was coming off the expressway and I was turning, and the wheel went solid.
I almost went right off the road. After that I got rid of it and bought a 1991 Pontiac Grand Am LE. And 5 days later the person who bought it off me for $50 came back and told me the transmission blew up, and the computer was messed up... other than that, it was a good car.
The car was quick. The 3.0L was good and had plenty of pep to it. The best thing I liked was the interior. I could fall asleep in that car, it was so comfy.
It drove excellent when I first got it, and I was satisfied with all its options.. If it weren't for the transmission, powersteering, A/C and computer, I would still have it.
If you're looking for a car to bring you to and from school or work, I just want to say - if you come across a Sable for sale, check it out completely.. Especially the power steering and tranny, and make sure it's got low miles. Stay away from the 90 and 91 Sables, I have heard they are a really really big headache..

I have to agree with the last comment... I am the Original poster of this little thread that I started in 2001.. I was 14 years old when I bought that car! from a crooked used car Dealer In 1998 "It actually was 1998 not 97". haha, I was a fourteen year old going with Grandma and Aunt pat to pick up a car, for me!, talk about EXCITED!.. I loved the car. Mine was Black, with the Grey lower panels and a red interior. The car was so great " when I was able to drive it by myself". when it died, I just picked up another car and sold the sable to some dude for $50...I regret it because I've never been in a car so comfortable and be so satisfied with the options. I can't even find one anywhere now. 9 years past, and Id still own another one, and work out all the bugs :)
You should stay clear of this kind of car if it has a high mileage!
First of all, the starter went bad.
Next, the starter went bad again!!
After that, the alternator went bye bye.
Then the battery went bad (not the cars fault, but still).
Then before my sister got rid of it, there was a problem that we never figured out, something with the ignition switch I guess.
Rear power windows didn't ever work when she had it.
Overall a lousy car that my sister never trusted, but she used it anyway.
Just bad luck with us I guess, but watch out just in case!!!
It didn't have much power for the size.
Fairly nice looking, but started to get rusty.

I would like to defend the Sable I had owned. I personally did not experience the problems you experienced. I really like the car. It had all the comfort and creature comforts. I had AC problems, too. Seems a seal disintegrated, thankfully I had a local AC guru and it was a quick and cheap fix (I had been quoted replacing a compressor at a lot of money, too).
I was involved in an accident and they would not repair the car (accident was not my fault). Otherwise I would have kept the car. It had over 137,000 miles at the time of the accident.
