1992 Mercury Topaz 2.3

Summary:

Best car ever! Never judge by the looks

Faults:

Passenger side door lock is broken (random lock crossed over-> easy to replace/ fix).

Muffler was just replaced October 07 (rust).

Steering rods are going to be replaced (just wear & tear).

General Comments:

Fantastic mileage.

Easy to drive, & gets up to speed quickly.

This vehicle was my grandfathers (who drove it about 2 a week to get groceries, etc), and it was bought brand new in 92, and when it came into my hand in 05' (he moved into a home) it had 25,000 kl on it and had absolutely no problems. I have doubled the mileage in the last two years, and I am a female driver, but I do have a lead foot & this vehicle does great on highway, & I never had a problem. Best gas mileages cost approx $40 (CA) to fill the tank.

Definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone.. I had heard about problems with other cars like it; but if it is well maintained and treated well, this vehicle is a blessing

1992 Mercury Topaz GS V6 3.0 Liter Man 5 Speed

Summary:

Nice one, but needs a lot of attention!

Faults:

Not many things as I Just got it! But my father, who owned it before me had a couple of them. Let's take a look:

-Starter changed once.

-Oil pan changed once.

-Engine completely changed at 25 000km because the engine block exploded, destroying many things around (and you know like me that there is not much space under the hood with the V6)

-Front and Rear Struts, but have been changed for high performance ones, which are very reliable, but a bit expensive.

-Gas Tank changed once.

-Water pump changed twice.

-Fuel Pump changed twice, but then my father understood you have to keep that car full to keep the fuel pump in good shape!

-And then only maintenance (battery, alternator, brakes, suspensions, air filter, oil filter, etc...)

General Comments:

That car got nice mileage per galon. With the manual transmission and the V6 3.0 L, running at no more than 70 Mph and keeping the RPM to 2000-3000 RevPerMinute, you will get something like 35 miles per gallon on the highway, and this is absolutely respectable for a V6 engine!

Also, if you are the kind of man to ride a car like a girl, i. e I mean pushing it to high RPMs, the car will give awesome performances, but will last least longer than if you would be more smart and ride it cool. If you don't push that car, it will run for a long time without major problems (after changing about everything thought!). If you push it, the gaskets leaks, the engine eat oil, the rad will blow, and then the engine will followed by the transmission!

Just take great care of it and that car, just like any nice girl, will be really reliable!

Does "something like 35 miles per gallon" mean actually 24-25 miles per gallon?

Cause what you are claiming for mpg is way more than much smaller 4-cylinders are able to achieve!

Is this the original engine for this car? As far as I know, the only Topaz to get the V6 and the 5 speed was the XR5, and there were not many of them made so it's somewhat of a rarity.

It's the Canadian Version, so 1992 GS with a V6 and a 5 speed is a bit less rare than XR5 here!

1992 Mercury Topaz 2.4

Summary:

Reliable and comfortable

Faults:

The guy who owned it before me somehow burned out third and fourth gear in the transmission. Inner and outer tie rods. Other than that only routine maintenance.

General Comments:

The car has good speed and handles well on left curves. On right curves it pulls a little, but not enough to make you crash. The interior is a basic design, but has very comfortable seats for long distance travel. The electric seat belts make it easy to not forget to buckle up. It has been a great car to me even with only three gears. I can drive anywhere and feel safe that the car will make it.
