1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 3.0L Twin turbo

Summary:

Very fast and an awesome car if you can afford it

Faults:

Stock Clutch failed at 75k. Then the transmission needed a rebuild at 78k.

General Comments:

This car has awesome acceleration off the line. If you drive the speed limit than there probably isn't a car around (including the exotics) that you can't keep up with or surpass from 0-60. Yes it is that fast! Downside is the car is has a very expensive upkeep and aftermarket parts are a challenge to obtain. Corners very well. Weight is an Issue with this vehicle. It's a very heavy sports car (approximately 3800 lbs).

Just a comment, 3sx.com sells a lot of after-market parts - pretty much anything you can imagine from massive camshafts to wide-body flares. They also have a 9 second 3000GT as a showcase of their parts. I guess that's not bad considering the 3800 lb weigh in...

1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT

Summary:

The car is beautiful, quick and reliable

Faults:

Door kick panels needed replacement.

Temperature gauge works intermittently.

General Comments:

The car is exquisitely beautiful.

Even the base model 3000GT has plenty of get up and go.

The car handles superbly.

The brakes are the best I've ever seen on a car, strong and dependable.

1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 Twin turbo

Faults:

Nothing major.

Belt broke on me once, easy to replace.

Replaced the clutch a Twice, one was my fault, other was from wear.

I have never had any clutch/ transmission problems, and was.

General Comments:

Beautiful car, Fun to drive.

Extremely quick for its price point.

All wheel drive and steering is makes it handle nicely.

I replaced the seats to match my tastes at about 70,000 miles they still looked in very good shape.

I also replaced the steering wheel to something a little... smaller. Anyone who has set in this car knows that it is gigantic.

Back seat was really unnecessary. The "bucket style" seat made it almost impossible for you to even fit a child seat in the right position.

Also the trunk was also a tight squeeze, have to shove my golf bag in there, but it will fit. I would have personally liked it if they had made the trunk deeper and taken the back seat out all together and moved all the spare/etc to that location.

The only thing I recommend for this car is to get some good tires if you plan to drive aggressively.

I take mine to the local road course a few times a month and the wear on the front tires mainly the only drawback.

Might I toot my whistle, I make very good lap times.

Other than these few things the car is perfect in every aspect in my opinion.

I greatly recommend this car to anyone who is interested. Engine is the most bang for your buck that you can find.

If I was given a choice whether to purchase one of the new Corvettes or a Low-Mileage 3000GT VR-4, I would choose the 3000GT without question.

1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL 3.0 V6 non-turbo

Summary:

A great bachelor ride

Faults:

The clutch went out at 103000 miles. This was about $600.

The water pump went out at 95000 miles. This was about $450.

I have had minor electrical problems.

The spark plugs and wires were changed and upgraded at 100000 miles. This was about $170.

Seats have began to show a little wear, not major negative.

General Comments:

The car is a chick magnet. Ever since I have gotten it, the number of women requesting my company has increased considerably.

I wash for some more power. The 222hp that the V6 pumps is decent and I can outrun most "Fast and Furious" amateurs.

The handling is great. I can corner at high speeds and it handles like it is on rails. The only set back with that is the uncomfortable feeling when the front end begins to lose traction. The reason for this is the front wheel drive, which I don't understand why Mitsubishi chose for this system for the 3000GT.

The seats sit well and it isn't a bad "trip taker" for you and one passenger. The back seats are a joke however, only kids and small cargo can fit comfortably.

The exhaust could have a little more rumble, but still has a low mumble that doesn't sound too much like a "grocery getter".

I wish that performance upgrades were a bit cheaper for the car, when you do actually find them.

This car is not for a family, or an older gentleman or lady. But it fits most ideas of a mid-life crisis car for a man. Or, the car is nearly the perfect bachelor ride. I want Mitsubishi to begin making the car again. I think they could be quite successful with a newer and faster 3000GT.

Zzzzzz It's a V6... removing the plenum exposes 3 more spark plugs in the back, please study this more (person who left comment before me)

I agree with the writer of the article about wanting Mitsubishi to start making them again, but with a few changes.

1. Make it lighter. Self explanatory.

2. Selectable AWD/ RWD. Launch it from the lights at insane speeds or smoke it up till the tyres pop.

3. Go back to the original styling. I love the ferrari look, and the 'face lift' model looks too boring for me.

4. Either make the rear seats usable or remove them. They are taking up space and precious weight.

5. Make it cheaper to fix. I know this one will spark arguments, but the fact remains that if a car is difficult to work on, more time will be spent, which means more cash going into the mechanic's pocket (great for us by the way). Really simple things like making bolts easier to access will save massive amounts of time and money.

Please don't get me wrong, I love these cars, they are the sexiest you can get without going Italian, and the engines are veritable powerplants. I reckon all that is needed is a few refinements here and there, and Mitsuishi will have a real supercar slayer.

I agree, the car is awesome! The car would benefit from and RWD system due to its hard to get to belt system. This in turn would give the car an easier repair.

They should bring it back. Redesigned new turbos, give it a lot of new upgrades. No more 60k services... way too much.

Faults:

I have had nothing go wrong with this car since I have had it.

General Comments:

This is a beautiful car that people stare at when you pass them. The acceleration is amazing and the handling is even better. This car will go zero to sixty in under five seconds. This car is all-wheel-drive and features an all-wheel-steering system. The cabin is very nice with an optional ten disc disc changer. The air-conditioning is the best I have ever seen. The back seat is really tight and not suitable for adults. This is the best car I have ever owned. It only cost me $17,000.

Hi. I am very interested in the 3000gt, but am confused as to which model had the flap headlights (I really don't like the way the other kinds look.) Could you please tell me if yours is it? Thank you.

The 1991-93 models had retractable, or "flap" headlights. Also, I believe they made 20 less horsepower in the VR-4 models and had a 5-speed transmission, whereas the 1994 and up models had a 6-speed.
