1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Summary:

Great car - would buy again

Faults:

Actually the Eclipse was the best car I have ever owned - both front wheel axles did eventually rust through (but I live in Wisconsin); this was after I had had the car for several years.

Also the exhaust system (muffler and all pipes) rusted through.

Other than that, the car was a dream. I never had any mechanical problems - car ran great in extreme cold (only time it would not start it was 40+ below).

In the last few months, my mechanic had told me the transmission was starting to go. It would cost more than the car was worth to replace - otherwise I would have driven it forever (had it for almost 10 years).

General Comments:

The Mitsubishi Eclipse was the best car I ever owned (had for almost 10 years and almost 200,000 miles, sold and engine was still running great - tranny just starting to slip).

I live in Wisconsin, so reliability in winter is really important - this car never had me wondering if it would start or run.

I am very mad I got rid of it (as the 1999 Malibu I bought to replace it is a horrible car - had it 6 months, ran 6 weeks so far and broke again.)

If I had a choice I would definitely buy another Eclipse or other import (had a Mercury Lynx before - that I ran till it literally fell apart at 200,000 miles)

1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse 1.8 SOHC

Summary:

It's a great runner for the price, and it'll blow your socks off.

Faults:

There is an oil leak and I'm not sure where it's coming from.

I had to replace the alternator almost immediately after buying it because oil was spraying up on it from wherever the oil leak is coming from.

General Comments:

This car handles like you wouldn't believe. When I bought it, I expected it to be an average buy, but it has really impressed me all around.

The only thing that bugs me is the fact that the e-brake doesn't work, so I don't get to have as much fun as I had hoped, but for $500 I couldn't go wrong.

1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.0L

Summary:

More reliable than my BMW

Faults:

1992 Eclipse GS.

New timing belt at 83000 and at 138000.

Has now 195000 and does not even smoke.

First generation 4G63 is the best thing Mitsubishi has ever built.

The car still turning heads.

General Comments:

I could use more than 135HP, but when a car with 195000 miles still does 125 MPH, I can't really complain, and that is stock motor.

1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX 2.0L Turbocharged

Summary:

Fun until it breaks!

Faults:

So far, I've had only minor problems with the car because the previous owner never drove it.

Drive-shaft makes noise, I'm told this is because of the rubber gasket around the rear carrier bearing.

Smoked on first startup. Some driving and new PCV valve changed this.

Vacuum leak from somewhere, hasn't been found yet. Not that serious though.

Overall, nothing that I wouldn't expect from a car that's 14yrs old.

Clutch might be on its way out, we'll wait and see.

General Comments:

Quick, but not fast.

Incredible handling for it's age.

Gas mileage and comfort are acceptable for a turbocharged vehicle.

Incredibly easy to modify.

You will work on it. On the plus side, parts are cheap.

Overall, it's what I expected in a Turbocharged, Foreign-Built, All-Wheel Drive, 2700$ car.

The Mitsubishi eclipse is actually not a foreign car, but an american one. The factory is in normal, illinois and it produced all of the eclipses, Eagle talons, and Plymouth lasers since 1990.

1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Summary:

Other than bad mechanical problems, it wasn't bad

Faults:

I can't remember every single problem that went wrong with the car. I was mainly too young to know what they were.. I just cared about getting my car back.

I had several problems with the transmission.

The starter had to be replaced once, with another problem later on.

It leaked oil a lot.

I had a problem with my exhaust. I never got it fixed, but it was really loud. It would defiantly affect how fast I was going on the freeway and my acceleration. I couldn't go faster than about 75-80 on a good day or it would freak out.

Sometimes when the car was stopped and idling, it would rattle.

The brakes wore really fast.

My axlr needed to be fixed costing about $500.

Lots of problems with the battery.

And these are just the ones that I knew about.

General Comments:

The seats were fairly comfortable for long trips.

Stereo system not up to date, but what do you expect from a 92.

It had fairly good fuel economy.

Its not a bad car for a first time driver because its not that old, but not that new.

It was very fast and handled really well at high speeds (when it was running).

It handles fairly well.

It has a sporty look to it.

I really loved this car, and I was sad to see her go. Personally, I don't think this car was that bad, but the owners that had it before me may not have taken great care of it. Also, I think the mechanic was kind of shady and did more harm than good.

"I really loved this car, and I was sad to see her go."

It's a love hate thing with these cars, I agree.

"Personally, I don't think this car was that bad, but the owners that had it before me may not have taken great care of it."

Ditto.

"Also, I think the mechanic was kind of shady and did more harm than good"

Absolutely, even (especially) the DSM specialists will rip you off.
