1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS 2.4 4 cylinder

Summary:

This car is terrible, and I will never recommend this manufacturer to anyone

Faults:

I purchased my 1999 Spyder and it has been nothing but trouble from day 1. The right front control arm has broken twice, and most recently my car has been in repair 8 times in the last few months for a leaky roof. The dealership has replaced every part, including the convertible top itself. The dealership continues to tell me that leaks in the front corners is normal, I refuse to accept that.

General Comments:

The car looks nice, and people definitely turn heads when you go by, but nothing is worth all the trouble I have had. I can't even wash my car without the interior being soaked. The manufacturer is no help, and the dealership continues to make excuses as to why it leaks, and they try to justify why the leak is normal. To me, a car that I pay 450 a month for should not leak from anywhere.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I am the person who wrote this opinion, so now I am commenting on it. I sued Mitsubishi under the breach of warranty and lemon law of New Jersey. My car was out of service for about 80 days total, and the dealer did various things to repair my roof. They even went as far as putting glue on the inside of my seals. Well needless to say, I won my case. Mitsubishi is buying back my car!!! They are paying off my loan, and giving me a cash settlement. It has been a battle, but it was well worth my time. Although I will miss the looks of the car, and all the mods I added to it, I won't miss the headache of the roof leaking, windows rattling etc... Oh and not to mention, I won't miss driving the piece of crap rental cars they give you when your car is in for repair!!! Thank you Mitsubishi for giving me my headache, and now, finally after almost a year, making it go away!!! So if you have a leaky Spyder, don't take it as the norm for a convertible, do something about it, seek a lawyer, and get rid of your lemon!!! Any questions, email me at SpyderEclipseGrl@aol.com.

Summary:

Due to this experience I will never purchase another Mitsubishi vehicle again

Faults:

I have the Convertible Spyder GS model.

My window rattles inside the door (has done this since purchase, I have been back to the dealer 3 times for the same problem, only fixed once and lasted a total of 1 hour before the rattle came back).

The brakes on the car are poor. It has been at the dealer 3 times for the same thing and finally the dealer replaced the rotors. They repeatedly said that it was dust on the brakes due to it being a new car. Unfortunately, the problems with the brakes never left.

The build of the car is not solid at all, you feel like you are riding in a Coke can.

The transmission is skipping. It will not take off even if O/D is on.

Now, the emergency brake light has been on for the past 5 months and it will not go off. Yet, the brak is not on? mm.

The visor material is beginning to separate and fall.

It leaks very badly in the rain.

General Comments:

I enjoy the convertible.

It is a nice sports car.

Although it can seat four, only 2 can seat comfortably.

I previously owned a '97 Eclipse RS and was very pleased with the performance. And almost no maintenance at all.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I totally agree with this person!!! My Eclipse Spyder is terrible also, and leaks very badly in light or heavey rain. I might as well just drive with the top down, but I have gotten used to the fact that when I go to work, I will arrive there wet... very wet.

1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse 4.0

Summary:

Beautiful sports car, but such a disappointment

Faults:

Transmission keeps going out since the 1st week we took delivery.. keep replacing.. so far $8,000 in warranty work done.. Mitsubishi will not pay another dime because car was abused and is high mileage.

I am a 50 year old woman driving this car.. manuals all my life.. I think there is a serious defect with the car causing the transmission to continue to go out.. repairing transmission is only a bandaid.. the car is at dealership for two weeks.. Never go out of town in it.. keep a cell phone and wrecker service number with me at all times.. I am so disappointed, besides paying 500 a month plus insurance, I still don't have a reliable car.

General Comments:

Beautiful sleek car.. gets lots of looks.

Unreliable.. embarrassed everytime I break down Feel like Mitsubishi should take this lemon back and discover the real problem as to why the transmission keeps exploding.

Very comfortable to drive.

Costs a lot to do maintenance work. Car requires a lot of maintenance.. so have a deep pocket to own one.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I too was about to buy an Eclipse till reading up on them a little more. The problem with your tranny maybe what is called 'crankwalk'. It deals with the crank shaft and the tranny... not sure of all the details, but if you look it up on supercars.net's forum... you will find a lot of discussion about it. You may check with your dealer about that.

I'm kind of curious where you found a 4.0 liter eclipse. I own one love it and I've never seen an engine larger then 2.4 liters.
