1999 Mitsubishi Galant DE 2.4L 4 cylincer
Summary:
Good used deal, just check the brakes
Faults:
Water pump replaced under warranty at 30,000 miles.
Brakes redone at 60,000 and 90,000 miles, due to excessive rotor warp which has never been solved.
Fuse box melted down due to a fuse blowing related to the air conditioner.
Realized that the cabin pollen filter must be replaced every year else the clogging causes the air conditioner to blow out a fuse often.
General Comments:
The 2.4L four cylinder engine is quite torquey, and drives well at 3,000 rpm (about 72 MPH).
The transmission shifts very well.
The car is light, so it's easy to drive in comparison to heavier cards.
The front seat on the DE is slightly uncomfortable, due to inferior amount of padding.
Body has exhibited little or no rust in seven years.
This car is built to go 12 years or 180,000 miles.
Mitsu's are very good cars, but probably not up to the quality standards of a Toyota or Honda.
Dealers are hard to find, and the service is variable from dealer to dealer, anywhere from outright crooks to pretty good dealers.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I'd like to think Mitsubishis are good cars, but based on my experience and that of others, they are actually quite junky. My boyfriend bought a 2001 Galant with 70k miles. By 80k miles the transmission was shifting erratically and the A/C stopped working. The power windows jiggled going up or down as if not sliding tightly on the tracks. The doors sounded very cheap and tinny when shutting. It was comfortable, attractive, fast for 4cyl, but that's about all the good I can say. My personal experience was with a 1996 Dodge Avenger, the same car as the Mitsubishi Eclipse. The 2.0L 4cyl only ran on one certain kind of spark plug or else it shuttered, had NO power, and the check engine light would flash. The brakes were a constant problem with warping rotors. By 128k miles, the AC went out, the power steering rack failed as did the power steering pump. The battery light illuminated for seemingly no reason. The dashboard had a very annoying chirp noise from the glovebox side. The windows went off track. Just a horrible car overall. Very fun to drive though. Repair costs were higher than Volvos I've owned! Over $200 for a new headlight. $800 for a new power steering rack. These were the costs for the parts, not dealership costs. Insane. Totally insane. Mitsubishi scares me now and I'd be nervous to own another.
