1985 Nissan 300ZX 2 door standard

Summary:

Nissan support was nonexistent

Faults:

Major electrical problems.

Couldn't keep muffler systems on it.

Sound system great, when it worked.

Major rust damage to frame.

Fuel system had many poorly engineered components.

Leather seats were really plastic.

General Comments:

I adored this car and babied it, hand washed it all it's life. From day one it had electrical problems ranging from annoying to dangerous. Too numerous to list, I'll just say that each time I told the dealer of them, they denied their existence - even when they were demonstrated to them! Once they actually said I couldn't have that problem because my car was a year too new!

Most were never fixed, even by the independent mechanics I turned to - just too difficult to isolate. Finally learned that to get rid of the buzz in the radio that only appeared when the headlights were on - all I had to do was turn on the rear view mirror heaters! Worked great till it burned the heaters out.

An engineering design flaw meant I put new muffler systems on it every two years.

At one point, the dealer had it for 8 weeks before they figured out how to fix the fuel system.

My plan was to own this car forever. When the frame began rusting, many mechanics told me my hand washing had made it last as long as it did - all the others had rusted out years before. I had to dump it when the steering could not be fixed because the frame would no longer support it. By this time, the seats were in shreds - they weren't leather, they were plastic!!

My 1985 300zx2+2, ($24,000.), had the plastic (leather) seats too, which were junk. I think we received $200.00 worth of Nissan coupons for their misreprestation. I just filed a review here and I mentioned the car fire caused by leaking fuel injectors. I think the car was slow, not near as fast as the new ($12,000.) mustang coupes I buy for each of my 3 kids 16th birthday.

1985 Nissan 300ZX zx 3.0 non-turbo

Summary:

A thriller of a car

Faults:

Air conditioning blows hot when accelerating.

Electronic dash went out.

Minor leak in T-tops.

Driver seat coming apart at seams.

Gas gage not working accuratly.

Radio replaced.

Slight hesitation when cold.

General Comments:

My car is a blast to drive. I have had many comments from people who once owned a 300zx and missed it dearly. The car handles well in corners and seems to have enough power to keep me grinning.

For you're a/C blowing hot air. Try checking your air compressor under right headlight.

1985 Nissan 300ZX V6 3.0

Summary:

One of the best cars Nissan ever made

Faults:

My transmission blew at 160,000 miles.

T-tops leaks only in a heavy rain.

Exhaust fell out of car at 161,000 miles.

General Comments:

A car with this type of mileage performs better than I could have expected.

A serious eye catcher to this day.

I haven't found anything in the same class as far as style, handling and reliability.

1985 Nissan 300ZX 2+2

Summary:

Great car if taken care of!

Faults:

Recently, we had a problem with the parking lights coming on while it was sitting. The power would be drained out of the battery, and it'd have to be charged to be driven anywhere. We had to replace the signal switch in order to fix this problem. The battery also had to be replaced because it had been totally used up.

The pulley for the air conditioning unit (I believe that's where it belongs) is also making a high pitched squealing noise every once in awhile, and is about to have to be replaced also.

Before we bought it, the water hoses busted and ruined the wires to the radio, so we had to replace it. That was quite a bear considering you have to take the passenger side seat out and part of the dash in order to put a new stereo in.

General Comments:

This car gets great gas mileage (about 27 mpg) and performs very well when driven. Steering is absolutely wonderful, stays tight as long as it is aligned correctly. Power driver seat and power windows are a couple of other great features of this classic car.
