Nothing mechanical has gone wrong with this truck since I have had it.

General Comments:

I love this truck. I got it in 2002 with only 64,000 original miles, one owner. The truck has no dents, rust, anything. Within the first week I had it, I installed a bush guard (2 Desert Fox Fog Lights mounted), skid plates, roll bar (4 KC HI-lites mounted) 31" Super Swamper TSL's, and a 3 inch a/c body lift. I have run this thing around on the trails keeping up with all the other trucks without a problem. Currently I am only running 31's. A small problem was putting them on with the lift because I had a little rub with them. Not too much though. Within the next month will come a 3" Suspension lift, and that should eliminate any problems. A friend of mine put 33" inch tires on his 720 with a 3 inch lift and minor fender trimming. Another problem I had is a noticeable loss of power with just the 31"s.. Yet this truck is still very reliable, and without a doubt, one of the best trucks made in it's year.

A love hate relationship

Faults:

Starting at around 55,000 miles, it developed an electrical fault that would blow the tail light fuse. Problem chased out to a wire rubbing against the frame, near the fuel tank.

At 110,000 miles, the head gasket blew. Interesting the difference between the 2.4L motor and the old two 2.0L in that the 2.4L motor will burn a hole between the cylinders, and the 2.0l blows the gasket out into the water jacket. I have also replaces the alternator three times. I learned a good lesson, don't buy a rebuilt alternator from a discount retailer. Get a good one from your Nissan dealer. The extra expense is worth not having to replace it again and again and again...

General Comments:

This Nissan 720 has all in all, been a really good and reliable pickup. It may not be the most comfortable, but it has cost me less to operate over the last seventeen years. What with the rising costs of new trucks, my old Nissan is now getting new seats and a paint job. I think I'll get at least another ten good years of service out of her, and then I'll hand it over to the kids. Maybe...

Nice survey! I like how you actually described your details on your truck and how you try to help other people know what could be wrong with there trucks. that's cool! I also have a 720 pickup truck ST, but it's an 86'! well anyway... just keep truckin'!

My experience with the Nissan z24 pickup truck began in 1985. My parents bought the little blue pickup with 3 miles on it. The truck had an automatic 3 speed, and no air-conditioning or power steering. The truck served my family's construction business for 6 years without incident. The only maintenance was the normal like: Oil changes and tune-ups occasionally. Then the truck was past on to me in High School. That's when the trucks future changed. I slammed it to the ground 3 inches. I used 4-inch blocks in the rear. Turning the suspension torsion bolts lowered the front. Aftermarket wheels added a nice touch. The truck at that point had 250,000 miles on it with the original engine and transmission.

My sister ended up using the truck for work. The truck lasted up to 270,000 when the transmission and engine needed over-hauling. When I moved out and attended college the truck was put out of business. The Nissan was left in our family's garage for about 3 years. I was married in 1998 and bought a Honda Civic VTEC. With my wife and I going to work I needed a second vehicle. I looked and looked for a used Toyota or any import truck, or car I could find. With no luck my mom mentioned that her Nissan truck was going to be given away. I immediately jumped on the opportunity. My wife and I loved racing so the truck was a viable option. So our focus then was to build the truck. This time I researched everything. I wanted to make the truck fast. Now that we had the racing bug I could not keep myself from building the truck to look good and go Fast. So I rebuilt the transmission and motor. A crane Cam with 267 lifts 287 duration was added, a Red-line Weber Carburetor Outlaw, Hooker racing headers, open cat, and a upgraded ignition. In the works are a racing torque converter, Nitrous kit, and slicks for the quarter mile. This truck has served the family well. The time has come to make it a superstar. With all the imports racing now like Honda's, and Toyotas Nissan's are in the background with only Skyline GTR making the runs. Toyota trucks are at every racing event. I think it is time for the Nissan truck to come out and play wouldn you agree?
