1996 Nissan Hardbody Pickup 2.4L

Summary:

Dependable both on and off-road

Faults:

Wire to air flow sensor keeps breaking, and I keep soldering it back on.

E-brake wouldn't hold it on a hill when I bought it.

Ball-joints needed to fixed at around 84,000 miles.

Break lines replaced as soon as I got it. (Maine uses a lot of salt on the roads)

A number of other suspension and steering-related parts. Not a fault of the truck, but of the roads that I had to drive it on when I first got it. Every car I drive seems to have those things go wrong because of those rough roads.

Rust on the fenders and rocker panels.

General Comments:

I love this truck! It is a regular cab version, 4×4, and 5-speed.

Sure, it is not a speed demon with the four-cylinder. But a truck doesn't need to be. It is a basic utilitarian vehicle. About the only comfort feature it has is power steering. Just the way I like a vehicle. Less to break and cost me money to fix.

I can get to my favorite fishing spots in the Maine woods. This truck will take anything I throw at it. Logging-truck roads, snowmobile trails, no paths at all. Not too shabby for a stock 4×4.

It gets over 20 miles per gallon driving around town. 26 on back roads (40-50 mph, with little stopping), and about 18 on the freeway if I keep to 65. It's plain to see it likes speeds around 40-50 as far as fuel is concerned. But hey, it was built when the national speed limit was 55, so that makes sense.

It has a small fuel tank, so don't expect much range. About 230-250 miles and you'll be looking to refill the tank.

Overall, I love the truck. It's no luxury car, but I bought it knowing that. It gets me from Point A to Point B reliably, whether there happens to be a road connecting the two points or not. If you need dependable transportation, this truck is great.

1996 Nissan Hardbody Pickup XE King Cab V4

Summary:

Awesome!!! Best truck on the planet!

Faults:

Things gone awry...

The truck rattles on startup, but has done this since day one.

The A/C compressor needed changing 2x (makes really loud squeal when the A/C is on).

Truck ran hot, hose needed replacing.

General Comments:

I got this truck from my mom when my GMC Jimmy died, it has been a road dog... I drove it to and from Houston to br over 12 times, always on vacation, always anywhere!!

I love green, she is a emerald of a truck... anytime I let anyone borrow her they always try to keep her...

She is fast on acceleration (with the A/C off) and is always ready to ride.

I have not one time had a day that she wouldn't start... this has been my favorite vehicle on the planet. I don't know what Nissan was thinking when they made this model, but they should have never stopped!!!

I ran into someone doing about 35, never broke the headlights...

I wouldn't trade her for anything! 12 years 203k and still kicking!!!

Gotta love the green!

I have a 1996 Hardbody XE 4 cylinder, when it started rattling on start up (sounding almost like a machine gun) I replaced the timing chain and found the slack guide was broken. That sounds like what is happening to yours.

1996 Nissan Hardbody Pickup KSX 2.4 no guts with big tires

Summary:

Great looking truck to sit in your yard, if you have no desire to legally drive the thing

Faults:

We bought the car as college gift for my daughter, and had no idea about check engine lights.

Here's a valuable tip; if you turn on the car, you must see the check engine light come on and then go off. If this does not happen, then walk away. Don't waste your money, no matter how good a deal or how good it looks. Do not go any further.

The bulb was out, we changed the bulb, learned about codes, check engine lights and emissions requirements. Sent it to the dealer, $800, and they still could not find the problem. They did offer, for $400 more to change another component but could not promise results.

We changed it with a dealer part for $300, did not work, changed charcoal canister, blew the lines, changed O2 sensor and had multiple rounds with motor vehicle dept. Put the vehicle on the all-data subscription to find out a way to trace the codes.

To date we have spent approximately $2500, and if this is higher, I am not admitting it, to find the problem, and it just keeps running us in circles. There is no way to ever re-coup the money.

We are fortunate to live in a partially exempt emissions area, and it is registered with stipulations. I have often thought about just watching it burn, especially the two years it sat in the yard, unregistered, useless and a huge burden.

General Comments:

The truck runs great. Have a small problem with a squealing when it is first turned on. Have performed general maintenance that is to be expected; the only problem is the check engine light. We think one of the pins is not grounding out on the ECU when it is supposed to (I highly recommend a subscription to all-data and no purchase of this year/model truck).

We tried to do the right thing by getting my daughter to college. If it accomplished one thing it was this, it got her started in college at a time when I didn't think she would go four years ago.

You might try to replace the computer?

Check engine light problems with early OBD2 Nissans are awful, but it sounds like your bigger problem is that you took it to the dealer.. O_O.
