1990 Nissan Maxima SE 3.0

Summary:

An absolutely wonderful car

Faults:

I have had my transmission rebuilt twice now and looking for another one.

I replaced my motor because the head gasket blew. The new motor has 87,000 miles on it.

The clear coat is coming off really bad.

General Comments:

Real nice car overall.

Luxury & sporty.

The Bose system is nice, but a pain to get rid of if you want to upgrade.

1990 Nissan Maxima SE 3.0L

Summary:

Great bargain all around

Faults:

The water pump died at 130,000 miles.

General Comments:

GREAT, FAST, CAR.

I've gone over 125mph, and was told by a friend I hit a few miles over 130mph. So in other words this car GOES. Will tear apart many cars on the highway and right off the line.

Many things can be done to the car and there are many clubs online.

Great fun hobby car.

1990 Nissan Maxima SE 3.0

Summary:

For the price I paid, which is 1500. I can't complain

Faults:

I have bought this car from a friend, and he has told me that he had had the water pump replaced, radiator, and starter.

General Comments:

This car, compared to my 1985 eldorado, is very quick, and pretty good on gas.

I'm 6 ft 235 lbs. and it fits me just fine. the steering is responsive, and it has a very smooth ride although the car has a little more bounce over bumps than I'm used to. but it has nothing to do with the struts. i plan to have the timing belt replaced just as a precautionary measure. The stereo was replaced with a BS unit. not too sure if it is a passive stereo. if its not I plan to put my clarion bad boy in there.NOW...The car does give me a problem with starting, sometimes the engines cranks without strting. but the 2nd time around it starts. possibly a spark plug problem. and the key has a problem with the ignition as far as turning.Overall, so far so good.

1990 Nissan Maxima SE 3.0L SOHC 160 HP

Summary:

The first true 4 door sports car

Faults:

Struts due to long sitting time.

Ball joints and tie rod ends.

Exhaust goes about every 30,000 miles at the flex pipe.

All new calipers and rotors @ 85,000 miles, rear brakes love to make god awful groans when in reverse.

Common injector failure @ 103,000 miles.

Rust coming thru in the quarter panel wheel well lip area on both sides.

Bose system has seen better days, rear speakers come on when they feel like, usually just in time for the front ones to take a break.

General Comments:

This car was and still is very fast, will beat just about any other early model 4dr 6 cylinder sedan out there in the 1/4 mile. Out on the highway with a chip I've been clocked @122 MPH (Thank you Canada).

Handles very nice good road hugging characteristics, strong 4 wheel disk brakes, very confident in the twisty's for a 12 yr old family car.

Engine sounds real good from 3 grand to the red-line, especially with an intake and exhaust.

A/C still cranks.

This car, other than its expensive injectors, is one of the most reliable cars out there. It makes the run from home in NYC are to college in the Detroit area about 10 times a year, then serves as a 25 mile daily commuter.

Comfort is great, it has plenty of room for all my belongings on those long trips with 3 or 4 of my friends.

White gauges that most companies are finally catching up with.

1990 Nissan Maxima GXE 3.0 L

Summary:

A plush car, but has a few issues

Faults:

I can't believe none of the other reviews here have mentioned trouble with the fuel injectors. The injectors die all the time, because they are buried deep in the engine, which makes them get ridiculously hot. The symptoms of bad injector (s) are a rough sounding engine that has less power than normal (it sort of 'sputters'). This problem can be intermittent and weather dependent.

In about 1994, the dealer told me I had a bad injector, and it was replaced under warranty (I had to pay the $200 labor).

In 1996, another injector went bad. I did the repair myself, and found 2 of the 6 injectors were bad. They're very expensive items, $150 each or more just for the part.

Moved to a new state and about 4 years later, 2 more injectors were bad. This time I replaced all 6 (myself). About 1 month later, an injector went bad. The dealer replaced it under warranty, since I had just bought all 6 from them.

I still had to pay $200 labor.

A friend of mine bought the same year/model used in about 1999. Sure enough, his had bad injectors too.

Between my friend and I, he replaced the radio, which requires a full replacement, since the bose speakers are independently amplified. I just live with its problems.

I nursemaid my antenna, cleaning and lubricating it 3 or 4 times a year with brake fluid. It usually works, except in sub-zero weather.

The clock is dying slowly but surely. The lights on the shift box don't work or work intermittently on both my friend's and my car.

Recently I just had the water pump die, which possibly was related to the water plug falling out of the radiator, causing the engine to overheat. $700 repair, since I had the timing belt and other belts replaced with the water pump.

General Comments:

Its a good car overall, but the fuel injectors are a pain in the!@#%%. The other problems I can live with, as they're relatively minor. I mean, get a watch or a velcro clock if you really need to know what time it is.

Very spacious, and smooth riding.

Newer (1995+?) models apparently shouldn't have the injector problem since they aren't buried in the engine where they can overheat.

No cupholder either. : (

I am just now seeing the rough idle and power loss and have been hunting down the problem. I have suspected the injectors, but haven't ruled out the ignition module. How did you figure out which injector it was? Please respond to censo69@aol.com

1990 Nissan Maxima SE 230,000 miles. We purchased this car back in November 2002. On the way home in bumper to bumper traffic the top of the radiator blew off. The gauge never read anything over C. Spewing anti freeze all over the windshield and hood. Engine seems fine as it started when turned on to place on tow trailer. We towed the car to our mechanic who replaced the radiator and cap with a new one, but he said there was still pressure building up. More than what is normal, I guess. He will search for the problem Monday; but if anyone has had this problem please let me know.
