1991 Nissan Pathfinder SE 3.0 6 cylinder

Summary:

Great value, long lasting quality

Faults:

I am the second owner of this vehicle. I replaced starter at 205,000. Its just starting to use some oil at 220,000. Suspension is getting stiff. Not as smooth a ride as it once was, probably have to have something replaced soon dealing with that. Still not bad for so many years and miles. THE 4-WHEEL DRIVE IS STILL SMOOTH AND STRONG.

General Comments:

Acceleration and engine strength still feel comparable to what I started with. I wish it was quicker, but it holds speed with no problem up down the mountainous region where I live.

The car doesn't pick up on speed, but drives good on slippery conditions.

1991 Nissan Pathfinder SE 3.0L V6

Summary:

A versatile, practical SUV that needs a bit more ummph

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with the vehicle so far.

Added A Transmission Cooler and remote Transmission Filter to aid the transmission when shifting. These cars are notorious for automatic transmission problems, you need to reduce the amount of heat for them to live long.

Added nerf bars for style and utility.

Added a K&N air filter for a bit more HP and a reusable filter.

General Comments:

This SUV has performed reasonably well. The 3.0 Liter V6 is sluggish and underpowered in terms of acceleration, but once you get cruising the power is adequate.

I like the style and the utility that the vehicle offers. Perfect for hauling 6 people to a baseball game or for carrying building materials from Home Depot.

The cabin is very bright (thanks to the sun roof) and the controls are pretty well laid out.

All in all, the vehicle is very versatile.

I just wish that it were a little faster and that the transmission shifted a bit more smoothly.

I change my mind about this car!

There is a serious transmission problem with Pathfiners from 87-95 and eventually all of the transmissions in these SUVs will give out or have to be rebuilt someday. It's ashamesd that an otherwise great car has such a huge problem!

1991 Nissan Pathfinder SE 3.0L fuel injected

Summary:

A tough and reliable truck

Faults:

The frame was built to light.

Floor seemed to rust to fast.

The frame had to be welded many times.

It is a little under powered.

New parts are over priced.

Body panels cannot be replaced without welding.

General Comments:

The main reason I bought a Nissan is because they are tough.

I saw some else with a Nissan that blew the engine.

He ended up putting a piston out the side of the block.

While holding the piston he drove the two kilometers home.

The truck never died until he shut it down for repair.

Mind you it ran very very poor, but it still ran.

That truck was put through hell and back.

When I saw that I was sold.

Any truck that could handle that must be good.

The few draw backs are out weighed by the performance.

I find that they work great.

I never been left stranded.

I use mine off road and for traveling with no trouble getting to where I need to go.

If the few flaws were solved then it would be great.

1991 Nissan Pathfinder SE V6

Summary:

Great car, but for the manifold issue

Faults:

Exhaust manifolds replaced TWICE.

Passenger door lock relay replaced.

Rear window hatch pistons replaced - aftermarket.

Starter.

Alternator replaced.

General Comments:

EXHAUST MANIFOLDS. I've had this car since new and I've had the exhaust manifolds replaced twice - by the dealer - for free. How? I call the Nissan USA headquarters in Long Beach and hammer them relentlessly until they cave. And they will. My car has only 89500 miles on it and this is the third set of manifolds including the original. They are defective and there is a recall out, but they don't tell you. They will try and say that they'll only cover 96-97 models, but point out to them that that was he year they fixed the problem and this is the year they would have the least recalls. I'm original owner so that helps and the dealer - Connell in Oakland, CA is a very good dealer, but everyone with these manifold problems should - even if you're not original owner - contact Nissan and demand satisfaction. The car is a great car otherwise...

I have the same problem with the heat. Did you ever find out what it might be?

8th Mar 2011, 21:02

The heat travels up the transmission tunnel from the exhaust/ gearbox / engine and enters the cabin via the handbrake opening. It only does this if you have your windows down, or the sunroof open. This causes vacuum in the cab, and draws the heat up.

Solution is simple, turn on the fan to pressurize the cabin, i.e. select fresh air from outside, and heat or cool it by turning on the fan and forcing it into the cab. Since the cab is therefore at a higher pressure than the air under the vehicle, the heat will not travel into the gaps around the handbrake!

Happy days!
