1991 Nissan Sentra SE-R 2.0L 16v DOHC

Summary:

If you can find one in good shape, this is the best used car you can find on an extreme budget

Faults:

I have had to tighten a belt and replace the front brake pads.. so far.. that is it.. at 17 years of age this car does not rattle or shake.. it is very solid.

General Comments:

This is my second car, and you cannot ask for much more from a car that is 17 years old..

It is conservatively styled, but has a nice regal wide tired stature for a car that is barely a compact.. I love commuting in this car.. I regularly sail by soccer moms and corporate schmoes in their newish SUVs, thinking they can get around me with ease.. nope, it doesn't happen; this car has ample power for it's age.. and it gets great gas mileage as well...

This car could easily become a classic.. it was one of the 1st "sleepers" on the market (a conservatively styled sporty car that can truly perform)

1991 Nissan Sentra XE 1.6L

Summary:

Great car and very inexpensive to maintain

Faults:

I have owned this car for about five years and I have replaced the clutch, tires, valve cover gasket, stereo, plug wires, cigarette lighter, speedometer cable, headlight housing (both sides) new paint, rear struts, all filters and caps, O2 sensor, spark plugs, both cv axle shafts, glove box lid and steering wheel (taken from a SE model) front speakers, rear speakers, floor mats, radiator, upper and lower radiator hoses, speedometer cluster, front brakes, hubcaps.

General Comments:

A very good car and great on gas... this is the car to buy (1991-1994) models if you want to save money and gas.. there are plenty of parts and the car is easy to work on if something goes wrong with it... The motor has a timing chain instead of a timing belt and this is much stronger and last longer.. my car has 220,000 miles and the motor and manual transmission are original and still running strong... if you can then go for the SE or SE-R models because these models have the bigger 2.0L motor, spoiler, and sportier looking interior.

1991 Nissan Sentra E 1.8?

Summary:

Mercedes car quality on beer budget

Faults:

The car sat in someone's driveway for years, so it needed brake rotors and pads. Also a front strut.

The paint is also badly worn on the trunk lid and roof. Also a little on the sides.

General Comments:

At first I was so upset when I lost my job and the Mercedes was repossessed. I purchased the '91 Sentra for $800, knowing that Nissan was a good cheap car.

I think I should have bought the Sentra to begin with. Not as pretty as the Benz, but time to grow up at almost 30. What a great little car!! So far, so great.

Good for you! I owned one of those from '98 to '03, though it was a "Classic" (Only sold in Canada), witch in fact was a '88 with throttle body injection instead of a carburetor and '90 body. It was very reliable and I loved it a lot even though the engine was anemic. Good thing it had a manual transmission, the automatic is just too sluggish. There is one way to still have a bit of fun with it though. Just swap the P155/70R13 tires for a set of P195/50HR14 tires & rims. P195 is the wides tire the chassis will accept and believe me the difference is rather incredible.

In the description of your car you seem not to be sure about what engine you have. It's either a 115 hp, 1.6L DOHC or a 144 hp, 2.0L DOHC.

Awesome little car!

Faults:

CV boot worn out.

Warped front rotors.

Factory tapedeck worn out.

General Comments:

Excellent car all around. Easy to fix, easy on gas, easy to park, easy to find parts for... you get the idea. Simple, efficient & practical pretty much sums it up! Buy one if it's in good shape. Owning and driving this puts my old 929 in a distant unfavorable memory!
